we need a new word for this kind of inability to even see sane on the horizon...

that breeds this kind of bible-thumping, millenialist and alarmingly ignorant claptrap? This archetype of the vitriolic, uber-reactionary, pugnacious, paranoid, hate-filled nutjob (Pastor Hagee, Pat Robertson, Senator McCarthy, Father Coughlin, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, John Bolton, etc) is frequent, predictable and frightening. We really have a knack, for such a supposedly civilized country, for turning out narrow minded and fire breathing little demagogues. Perhaps it has to do with our frontier history, or the fact that we were in part settled by so many persecuted religious groups and inspired so many New World cults.

Every day we seem to get more of the "supposedly" and less of the "civilized" in this country.

I've read lately is Myths America Lives By that traces several competing trajectories of assumptions of what it means to be "American" back to various historical moments. It was fascinating to see the distinctions emerge so clearly, and to see how many actively contradictory ideas people juggle without being aware of the tensions of those ideas. Has a chapter on millennialism that speaks to what you're talking about.

Perhaps the root of certain persistant myths that America dies by is that of American exceptionalism.
Though I've not yet read it, I've heard this recent book--Homeland Mythology: Biblical Narratives in American Culture--is also quite good.

hundreds of thousands of children learned to read; healthful food was served to millions; in rehab centers, victims of accidents and disease learned to walk and handle small objects again.
And so on. Will people connect the dots, do you think?
Sheeeesh.

Meanwhile, call me when this guy's house burns. Remember 1998 when Pat Robertson said that "hurricanes and other disasters" would hit Florida as punishment for Disneyworld allowing a Gay Pride Day. That year, no hurricanes hit Florida, but two destructive ones came up the Atlantic coast and hit Virginia Beach, home of Pat Robertson's ministries. I get the feeling God prefers this sort of person not speak for Him.
