I wish I'd written this, because it's exactly what I've been thinking.

Almost worse than their actual crimes are the precedents they've set for future regimes. The next one, or the one after that, may try to push the limits of power, surveillance, constitutional destruction, and virtual dictatorship even further, using everything the bushies got away with as the justification.

There's a name for people who protect criminals: accomplices.
