of this type of fraud, when the highest paying tax payers are bilking the gov't out of millions by using all kinds of illegal means. They don't ever go after that kind of fraud. Just the poor folks.
The slogan around our house:
If you are poor, you pay more.

ten's of millions of dollars are wasted in welfare fraud each year.
That's about .0003% of tax money that wounds up in the pockets of well connected Republicans since the WAR ON TERROR! started.
But that's institutionalized systematic fraud hidden under the guise of legitimate war funding.
Priorities people, it's all a matter of priorities and who's in power to set those priorities.

Constitutional issues aside, does this even make practical sense?

That more money is spent on the Medicaid "anti-fraud" programs each year than was spent on all Medicaid fraud, before the "anti-fraud" programs were put in!
And as noted in another comment, they've never actually found fraud with this program, so it certainly doesn't make practical sense!

"Searching someone's apartment without a warrant" program?
Definitely costs more then returns.
I guess the Constitution is just a matter of opinion.
Never ceases to amaze me how so many people can get so upset if they hear a person defrauded the government out of a payment of $400 a month, but yawn when they hear $billions have just gone missing in Iraq.
And on and on.
by Pescadero Bill on Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 08:37:23 AM PDT
Because the mindset of those people (when you reduce it to its most base element) is that the billion dollars was just innocently misplaced by white people who otherwise know what they're doing, and the $400 was going to shiftless lazy Negros to support their brood of pickanninies and love of bling.
Never mind the fact that whites make up 2/3 of all welfare recipients. Make no mistake, racism is at the root of this attitude.

It's also an anti-poor aspect, that is, "If you weren't a lazy no good idiot, you wouldn't have to apply for welfare."
People can be anti-poor and not racist, although the two do tend to go hand in hand.

it goes much deeper than just race. it's a "he's gettin' somethin' I'm not gettin' and gettin' it for free" kind of thing. I hear it from wingnut friends and relatives all the time. I see it as jealousy and greed in its purest form.
