It's truly impossible to understand this, but you can rest assured this will have huge political consequences. How will it be spun?
Sadly, that's what I though of before I realized that there are human lives in danger. Get Hillary on the fucking phone and let bygones be bygones.
To be fair this is what many predicted would happen to Obama running for President.

The police are the experts on how to handle this. I'm not certain if Hillary should be directly involved.

due to the very real risk that it would escalate the situation. In real life crisis negotiations, 3rd parties don't get to talk to the hostage taker... especially if the hostage taker wants to talk to them.

Count on O'Reilly, Malkin, Coultergeist, and all of the usual suspects to blabber on and on about it being self-instigated so Hillary can continue along her "victim" theme.
I bet dollars to donuts that it's a right-winger/anti-choice/Fundie type who's taking the law into his own hands for Jeebus or some silly shit like that. I hope to goodness no one gets hurt or killed. :(

I prefer the definition:
an act or strategy of using violence or the threat of violence against non-combatants to achieve a political goal.
so yeah, I'd say this is an act of terrorism. There are a lot of underground right-wing nut jobs, often obsessed with guns and force in terms of 'overthrowing' the government - which is clearly ludicrous. Some are dominionist christians, some are extremist libertarians, some are white supremacists, many are a mix.
My thoughts and hopes go out to those volunteers. They also go out to that crazed individual so that he gets the mental health attention he needs and that we can study his case to learn what makes people feel compelled to do this.

Not everyone is as political as we are. This easily could be a totally personal issue of the sort that happens rather often these days.
And why take hostages if it is some sort of political statement? It does not sound like political terrorism to me.

One way to undermine support for wrongful acts is to ridicule them and rob them of any legitimacy. At the time of the witch hunts, I am sure people took them very seriously, and that is precisely why they were allowed to happen. If everyone had broken into hysterical laughter and made a laughingstock of anyone attempting to arrest a "witch" or preside over the trial of one, then the witch hunts might never have occurred. It would have been too much of a strain on the dignity of those noble witch hunters. After all, they were after respect and power, not ridicule. It's hard to proceed in all seriousness with dignity intact when everyone is pointing the finger at you and laughing hysterically.
