little coverage coming from the USA. It is twenty four seven here in Mexico. I don't get it!
In September when my village here in Jalisco flooded, my diaries were on the rec list for four days.

and wanted to contribute. Then someone posted a diary warning about contributing to organizations that were run by right wing christians. Then we were all burned by Red Cross being so slow to spend money in Katrina. Any suggestions for a good local charity?

don't know. What we need is someone who is there. I collected donations and gave money and food myself. I am on the west coast and am not familar with the area of the floods. I do know that there is a lot of corruption in this country. I was fortunate that I know a very honest Doctor here, and we worked together distributing the donations.

Operation USA sounds pretty good. The church does much good work here too.

I will send along a contribution. They are saying no one died but that sounds too optimistic to me. We get floods here and people die- I bet they die in Mexico too.

read an AP report that says there are eight dead. The water is beginning to recede, so we will know then.

Fundacion Azteca is under the aegis of Ricardo Salinas Pliego, a slimeball who was fined millions of dollars by the SEC for defrauding investors. He and a buddy made over US$ 200M in a transaction using insider information.
As a result, he had to delist his company, Grupo Azteca, from the NYSE, and had to agree to refrain from being an officer of an NYSE listed company for 5 years.
Years ago, I was working for an investment bank that was about to take his Elektra company public, but we refrained from doing so because he, allegedly, sends goons to the homes of people who fell behind in their monthly payments.
Not a savory character.

Look for total bill to exceed over US$ 2B, according to one published report I came across.
I urge all to send as much as you can.
But keep in mind that the UN has stated that the disaster was largely preventable. Also keep in mind that the government should have more resources to counter such disasters.
In the US, the tax take is about 32% of GDP. In Mexico, it's about 10% of GDP.
