take public transportation to the airport. It's much cheaper than a cab or driving.

I had to take a cab to town as plane was delayed from L.A. and ended up costing me over 150 bucks!
I'm getting smarter, haven't flown a plane in almost ten years. I go by ferry, I went to Paris not long ago by ferry & car, less stressful and you get to stop whenever you want!

I don't think my brain can reconcile "car in Paris" with "less stressful". Does not compute!

among my co-drivers: I can shout obscenities they'd understand should they come too close to my vehicle!

check out flights from nearby cities to your destination. Parking at LA is expensive, maybe drive to Phoenix, park and fly (better yet? have relatives in said city that'll let you park by their house).
Driving? Make sure your oil and fluid levels are up to snuff. You'll need them. Pack the icescrapers and boots and gloves.
Make sandwiches before leaving and pack them with the seltzers or other drinks. A little cooler in the backseat goes a LONG ways and may be vital in winter weather. PB&J's'll cure anything.
