Republicans are the ones that usually nominate the establishment candidate.
Democrats have been known to nominate non-establishment types.
1952 Stevenson 1960 Kennedy (establishment was divided between Humphrey and Johnson) 1972 McGovern (establishment was Muskie) 1976 Carter 1992 Clinton (there really wasn't an establishment candidate in that race since Cuomo and Gore did not run).

a non-establishment candidate was 1992.
They haven't since and I don't expect them to this year.

That's only two contested nominations since a non-establishment nominee. If the proportion were any higher, "establishment" would be a meaningless term

If Cuomo or Gore had run, they would have been the establishment candidate.

In 1996 and 2000, you had incumbents running. In 2004, we went with Kerry.

Only 4 sitting VPs before Gore ever won the Presidency.
The net impact of being Clinton's VP for Gore were the whopping double digit deficits he inherited from the Clinton scandal/impeachment circus.
I've reached the conclusion that Gore should not have accepted the VP offer from Clinton. He should've run on his own in 1996 had Clinton lost and in 2000, had Clinton won. He would likely done far better than how things turned out, thanks to the Clinton baggage he was forced to carry in 2000.

That's a great plan, if he possessed clairvoyance. Gore still won in 2000, remember? Gore's mistake was not running this year. I'm sorry, but he could have won both the primary and the general election easily.
