I have mixed feelings about Chavez, but he certainly is a much better leader than US backed dictators like Pinochet, Trujillo and Rios Montt.

I think a lot of people on the far left romanticize wanna-be dictators/authoritarians like Chavez. Like clock, every week so, the pro-Chavez fanatics come here.

Talk about authoritarians, but that's okay, he's US sponsored.

If Chávez were a "wanna-be dictator," he could have manipulated the corrupt Venezuelan political system far more dictatorially than he has done so far.
The fact that he has not done so means that he's just another liberal populist with a big ego, one which the good folks at DKos would like a whole lot more if he weren't so uncouth.

always seems to land upon Jorge Castañeda as a source. Can anyone else be found to confirm Castañeda's take on Che?

...from those who romanticize him, than he gets from Bush's refusal to consider energy conservation? Compare how much less he'd be able to do if Sean Penn had stayed home, to how he'd suffer if Bush-Cheney had put one more bus on the streets. The real irony of Chavez-style Socialism is that he needs to charge what the market will bear to finance his projects.
