Also for anyone who's interested there is an interview with Brad Pitt largely concerning this very subject that will be on Larry King tonight at I believe 9PM EST? CNN.com has some tidbits from it that may be of interest!
They certainly support the diarist's assertion that he is one of us!

For anyone who might be looking for a more conventional charity, Mercy Corps has Katrina kits for $100. I donated one of those for my mother-in-law's Christmas present. She wouldn't be quite as wow-ed by Brad Pitt, I don't think. :)

Now that I'm in my late 50s, I have a lot of people on my Christmas list who have all of the knick-knacks and doo-dads they can handle. So I've given charitable donations in their name for several years. It makes me feel a lot better although it certainly costs me more.
This year, I have a number of young friends I want to just say "thanks for being around" to and I am planning on giving them credits at Kiva, a wonderful on-line micro-lending organization.

He was married to Jennifer Aniston and had an affair with Angelina and then dumped his wife. Brad has had a kid with Angelia but they never formally tied the knot. He may be good in helping others but I wouldn't consider him one of us.
by franziskaner on Wed Dec 05, 2007 at 01:29:53 PM PDT
If I recall correctly, Brad visited University of Missouri (his alma mater) back during the '04 elections and did an appearance at Jesse Hall, the main venue at Mizzou, for a screening of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11.
He's no Bush fan.
Good to see he's using his fame in in positive ways.

I used to work sci-fi conventions as a business and during that time got to rub elbows with a lot of movie/tv types. The story I got at the time was that Brad was a real primadonna to work with (a lot like Adrian Paul) and a continuing hassle to writers/directors/the staff and just about everyone around him. As the story goes (and I'm just passing on possibly erroneous rumors) he did a complete turnaround during the filming of Seven Years in Tibet. Somehow the place, the story, the truth behind the dramatization, or something else in that combination of things touched him and created a spiritual awakening and awareness in him that has over the years turned him into the icon everyone loves now. Without that movie and the experiences he had he was headed down the road of prettyboy Hollywood well known has been like Val Kilmer. I can completely emphasize with your sentiment but with the work he does and the things he stands for now I think he's one of the few who deserve every bit of success he gets. George Clooney is another one especially after producing Good Night and Good Luck.

I don't suppose it IS explainable, why some people see good looks where others see blah??
Mr Pitt is a nice guy, and apparently real lucky in love, and apparently a good father, and really understands how to use "celebrity"!
BUT... I have NEVER understood the swooning over his looks. Now, Clooney, Depp, post-bond Connery, etc., even Matt Damon, for those into sweet neoteny -- those guys I get. But, TO ME, Pitt is just another blond football jock. There's just no there, there! (As far as JUST looks is concerned.) Maybe I'm just old?

it's swooning over his acting I don't get. In my book, he's very good looking, I like his commitment to causes but his acting is only mediocre. Oh well, it gave him the money and celebrity to be able to do much good.
by kainah on Wed Dec 05, 2007 at 06:05:58 PM PDT
I thought he was superb in that! He's grown both as a person and an actor.
by jiml on Wed Dec 05, 2007 at 06:26:32 PM PDT
He just seemed very one-dimensional as an actor for a long time. But I will give Babel a try.
by kainah on Wed Dec 05, 2007 at 06:33:07 PM PDT
He also got positive critical notice for these: 12 Monkeys, Snatch, Fight Club, Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
I like Terence Malick-type of movies which are elegaic meditations so I loved AOJJ. It's worth seeing just for the master DP Deakins' cinematography, Nick Cave's music, the amazing, pitch perfect performance by Casey Affleck (the real star of the movie) as Robert Ford, and Brad Pitt's paranoid turn as Jesse James. Casey's performance needed Brad's to play against, just like Dustin Hoffman needed Tom Cruise in Rain Man.
I had to see Babel 2x, the first time I couldn't get past the tabloid target in order to see his character.

There is a French import that you can find in some upscale grocery stores called Le Petite Chevre. (not to be confused with the cheese) It's in the baby soap aisle. Very mild and moisturizing. Also, I've seen handmade goat's milk soaps at some crafts fairs. But if you can't think of a gift for a hard to buy person, I recommend the Zum products. Even if they never use the soap, they smell wonderful. The Frankincense and Myrrh soap is very seasonal. It smells rich and aromatic.

also pretty cool. Global Green,
After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Global Green USA made a dedicated commitment to sustainable building in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. As part of that commitment, Global Green, in partnership with Brad Pitt, sponsored an international design competition during the summer of 2006, with more than 125 entries competing to design a zero energy affordable housing development ... a dedicated and highly skilled team of sustainable design and building experts [is working ] to translate the winning design into a reality. Global Green broke ground on the project on May 10th and unveiled the first home under construction prior to the Second Anniversary of Katrina on August 21st. The first home ... is a showcase. All the final 5 single family homes and 18 apartments will be affordable green homes, not just in rent and mortgage costs, but operating costs and reduced health impacts as well.
