Most religions begin as cults and somehow later shed that label. As a Catholic, I agree with you on this since some parts of the Mass are kind of cultish. I tend to be one that religion is the opiate of the masses. Somehow religions brainwash people through guilt and fear. However, I have rediscovered my faith lately and am trying to not be driven by guilt and fear. I believe that everyone needs to contribute to humanity in a positive way and not just go to a service or Mass to be good. You can choose to believe or not, but how you act is what defines you. As a final note, they should have not used the term cult to describe Mormons on the air.

how you act is what defines you.
That sums up my religion.
I was incredibly shocked to hear the word cult on the air. I also think it was inappropriate but shows the power of the christians in this country.

I just hate that holier than thou attitude. That is one of the reasons my faith was lacking until recently. However, all religions will have those people. Pleased to make your aquiantence Onemadson.

It either shows the power of christians in this country, or it shows the incredible decay in journalistic standards at NPR. Or both.
And now a word from the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association

i had just been talking about how NPR was going downhill an hour before I heard this. My examples: John Yoo getting to make his case for gutting the constitution and Ted Kopple saying the reason the Iranians stopped their nuke program is because we invaded iraq.

I am with you onemadson.
I am atheist but I understand not all Christians are the same.

By definition, Mormonism and Catholocism are both cults, distasteful as that may be for all and sundry.
Good post, OneMadSon, dead-on. IMHO, Mitt had to reduce the 'Otherness' of Mormonism and he didn't accomplish it and, though it was apparently a blindingly brilliant speech according to the oft-fawning Tweety, he might just as well have stayed home as far as winning over people that are (right or wrong) concerned about Mormon Otherness.

I got the invisible superheroes meme from Get Your War On.
I hadn't ever had the balls to equate people's imaginary gods to comic book heroes.

Jesus is wearing a superhero outfit; there is a squadron of flying nuns in the background.
Can't remember...maybe it was in National Lampoon, many years ago.

From Religious Tolerance.org I didn't hear NPR, but would be surprised that they called LDS a cult, rather than explaining how the other churches see fit to call it that... i dunno.
Congrats on your rediscovery, El barragas! The secular, consumerist and political powers are also just as effective at instilling fear, guilt, inadequacy, confusion, etc... I'm on a long hiatus from the official church, myself, these days ;-)
