Do you wear hats or do they wear you? What special memories do you have of hats? What does/did your most favorite hat look like? How did it make you feel when you wore it?

I've been waiting for you for several hours now. :-) I'm totally bored and the only thing keeping me on-line was that it was Friday and I needed some Cronesense story-telling!! Now I'm going to go enjoy your story. Just had to tell you immediately how very glad I am to see you tonight.

How is the weather up in WY? Were you able to do your peace vigil tonight?
by Cronesense on Fri Feb 16, 2007 at 07:07:48 PM PDT
It was about 20 degrees and very windy today but the wind calmed down for us for the stand up. YAY!! I've had the flu all week, leaving me watching the Iraq debate in the House, so I was glad to be out there.
Now I'm gonna go tell you about my great-aunt, the milliner! Look for it down diary.

I wear them with jeans and t-shirs ONLY when bright red hair is a mess!

I had a great-aunt who had a large collection of the most beautiful hats you could imagine. Huge garden hats for outdoor teas, lovely little pillbox hats for church on Sunday, straw hats for gaardening...you name it, she had at least one.
The only problem with Aunt Matt was that her sense of style when it came to hats was completely at odds with her fashion sense...she came to my first wedding wearing the most lovely pink satin confection of satin and ribbons, which topped an emsemble of an orange taffeta skirt with a green and pink striped polo shirt, gray tube socks with purple stripes at the top, and blue pumps. This was, to her, formal attire.

a bonafide eccentric aunt! I bet you have many stories tucked away about her. Did anyone take a picture?
by Cronesense on Fri Feb 16, 2007 at 10:07:59 PM PDT
I threatened everyone within a 10 mile radius with a horrible, painful death if such a photo was taken. In hindsight, it would have been "interesting" to have a picture, but, at the time, I was young (one month shy of my 21st birthday) and intent on not having my "perfect wedding" spoiled in any way...it was bad enough that it was pouring down rain that evening.

I hope you are not offended but I am laughing right out loud at that amazing image! :)

I am now able to laugh about it, as well, but, at the time, I was completely mortified.

I don't want to hijack the hat-lovin' topic, but I'd love to hear more from you sometime about that family genealogy project!

what else is new! It started on day when I googled my maiden name which is very unusual in that anyone with that name in this country is blood related. Send me an email and I will send you the link to the project that has it's own web site.

My mother was always giving me a hard time, wanting to know where all my "peace and justice crap" came from. (My parents were both very conservative but they taught us to think for ourselves.) You can imagine my joy the day I got to call her and tell her the "peace and justice crap" came directly from her line -- my great-great grandfather, the lawyer, who married my great-great grandmother, the Quaker, both of whose families were heavily involved in the underground railroad. Mom tended not to bring up the peace and justice crap after that. :)
And, if it weren't for genealogy, I never would have found the topic for my first book. (shameless plug for a worthy cause) And that's a really long story.
