Barack Obama - I'll never see the threat of terrorism as a way to scare up votes, it's a threat that should rally this country against our common enemies

and served in India under the Raj and then farmed in Kenya during the White Mischief era. He attended Isak Dinesen's wedding to Blor Blixen in Nairobi at the Muthaiga Country Club. I took my son to Kenya for his 21st birthday present and we were there when the movie Out of Africa was being filmed. I got him a gig as extra (I knew the London based Exec Producer Terry Clegg), in the wedding scene. So my father's grandson actually played his grandfather for a minute or two in a movie about that event. Awesome.

Or were. My dad died in Dec.
But they were both strongly affected by their grandparents who were all born in the 1860s, due to deaths of parents.
My mother said once that she had a Victorian childhood, in the 30s, but became a very forward thinker with her own children in the 60s and 70s.

I so enjoy the freedom that came along in the 60s and my children tell me I take more than I should

I was born late in his life, and my mother was a lot younger than he was, so Dad wasn't that much younger than my maternal grandmother. Gramma told me about the flu epidemic, Dad told me about California when it was nothing whatsoever like it is today--miles and miles of orchards and farms, and Mom told me about listening to the radio broadcasts after Germany invaded Poland and feeling sick to her stomach and chilled.
Mom, Dad and Gramma all told me about the Great Depression. Highlights: Mom and Gramma packed grapes in sheds next to the Mexican women, Dad survived on his winnings hustling pool.
