Those fuzzy statements are the hallmark of someone who is desperately trying to conceal the truth.
I know nothing improper happened, but I don't know any of the details about what happened. I would have never done anything improper, although I don't recall, precisely, what I actually did. I lost confidence in the fired prosecutors even though I didn't select the prosecutors to be fired. I did, however, repose confidence in Mr. Sampson, to the best of my recollection. I lost confidence in the fired prosecutors because I had confidence in Mr. Sampson's judgments as to whom I should no longer have confidence in.
I too would love to question this sorry ass excuse for an Attorney General. I would also like to know which sorry ass excuse for a lawyer advised Abu G to write that sorry ass excuse for testimony.

system, I say this. Regular, ordinary, everyday people can spot bullshit pretty damn well. They know when their kids are lying to them, and they know when Alberto is.
Because Alberto lies like a kid.

was written by a team of WH lawyers and speech writers? This is Alberto's last chance to sway opinion before his hearing. I think it's the best ALL of them could do to save his sorry ass.
Barack Obama - I'll never see the threat of terrorism as a way to scare up votes, it's a threat that should rally this country against our common enemies

This is really the only thing the Rethugs know how to do. They work the media. This creates problems for them when they are pushed into the court room or investigative contexts that have rules similar to courts, where they can't control the dialog. What Abu G says in the WaPo doesn't mean bupkis to the Senators, except insofar as it opens more doors for questioning.
Poor bugger. He's toast.

he would have thrown that insipid speech right back into their faces, and walked right out of the room.
But, he doesn't. So, he's even MORE culpable, in my opinion.

given what we already know from other sources, isn't it possible that even a decent lawyer couldn't have gotten anything better out of the situation? From what I can see, there's no way for Gonzales to save his own skin, and little chance that he won't inflict some damage on Bush and Rove along the way. After all, what other option does he have - a "blanket 5th Amendment" plea a la Goodling?

Hell, the first thing that would have been better would be not to pre-release it. It's not like it answers any questions or cuts off any lines of questioning, or rallies public opinion to his side.
Witnesses are often told during prep for testimony not to reconstruct memories they don't actually have. I would have done, I might have done, I would never...all invitations to disaster.
If someone really can't remember, they have to say that they don't remember. But for the Attorney General not to remember how or why 10% of the USA's were fired, when it happened just a few months ago, and has been a matter of controversy since the moment it happened -- that's just not credible.
So, yeah, I take it back, he's screwed. I still wouldn't have pre-released that statement, though. It's just like hanging a bulls-eye on his chest.

if you see what I mean.
Whoever gave him this advice is trying to help him hang himself. Their allegiance is to Bush/Cheney, who've decided to cut the sweaty little sucker loose.
It all came clear for me when you said it's just like hanging a bulls-eye on his chest. People don't give advice THAT bad accidentally... often.
Sad, really.
Did you read the stuff about the people trying to prepare Gonz for testimony and appearances on TV? That they were extremely frustrated because he couldn't handle it?
Be good to each other. It matters.

But the witnesses I've prepared who couldn't remember what they did were almost always trying to remember things that had happened YEARS before, and did not seem significant at the time.
Abu G has no such excuses.
The best he can hope for is that the Committee, and the American people, end up believing he is the most incompetent Attorney General in history.
