If my fast math is correct - an average of 3% of the population has an abortion.
300 Million in the US 1/2 women (actually more) 150 Million women 40 Million abortions over 30 years 5 million per year 5 Mil / 150 Mil = 3% / year
Someone check my math...

40M abortions. 40M doctors. A total of 80,000,000 people, all serving prison sentences over making and/or performing a personal medical decision. Justice?

Let's make male masturbation a crime. All those sperm are potential life, just spilled out and allowed to die for no reason.... Whaddya think? Will a twenty year prison sentence teach 'em?

...that population is static, when it's growing. ...that all 150 million are of childbearing age.
I think a better estimate can be made.

GOP screaming talking point about abortions.
The part about '30 years' of stats was pretty buried in the fundie rhetoric.
by SallyCat on Thu May 10, 2007 at 05:05:58 PM PDT
300 million Americans, 150 million women.
1% would be 1.5 million. 0.50% would be 750 thousand a year.
Exclude women of non-childbearing age and it's back to around about 1% of women of childbearing age in America have abortions each year. Safe, Legal and Rare... I think we've got the Rare covered, and still legal as of tonight.
Safe?

Read the report.
The summary stats are in Tables at the bottom, after it downloads.
40,000,000 abortions is quite a political "big stick."

I'm questioning why the conservatives attempt to spin stories of drive-thru abortions when the numbers show it to be less than 1% of the population of American women of child-bearing age.
I dig stats!

and you are helping get votes for the religious right by simply repeating their frame. Framing is not silly, it is basic communications and politics, and, I might add, predates George Lakoff, as much as I appreciate his work, by decades.

Tell me, what is it YOU think about a woman's right to receive her doctor's best and most informed medical advice?
by boadicea on Thu May 10, 2007 at 06:46:39 PM PDT
(or 1%, if you believe an estimate below).
That's every year. How many abortions does the average woman who gets an abortion have? I don't know -- but let's say 2 for the sake of argument (it's probably less than that, but that only makes my point stronger). If so, then that means 15% of all women have abortions over a 10-year period (if you assume 3% annual; 5% if you assume 1% annual). As the stats above indicated, almost 1/4 of pregnancies are aborted -- if that's "rare," then we have vastly different standards.
(I'm strongly pro-choice, btw -- I'm only talking about the math here)
