He should have asked her: Q: "You said that you took an oath to the President. Is that correct?" A: "Yes, Mr Senator." Q: "Could you please elaborate on that oath?" A: "Huh .... ehhhh ... I, well, ... Senator, could you explain." Q: "Did you take an oath to the President and what was that oath?" A: "Ehh ... Senator ... I cannot recall the specific words ... " Q: "Did you take an oath separate from that taken by every other government employee, political appointee or otherwise, an oath swearing to uphold the constitution?"
....
Leahy did a great job. I do think, however, that it would have been great for him to stand up and "take the oath", read it outloud, and then question how anyone could believe that Sara Taylor had taken that oath seriously.

leahy acted like her grandfather and lead her to the correct conclusion. He gave her a pass, and then lectured her on it.
He should have set it up and let her make an ass out of herself.
Although, she did plenty of that herself.

Making a young blonde cry on TV would have been bad form, especially since there were seven Democrats and only one Republican present. You know the Republicans will play that card too if the committee decides to cite contempt.
Nailing her with facts, asking her to supplement her testimony in writing (about the work contract she wasn't sure she had signed and so on) and then letting her stew in her own shame while waiting for the contempt citation was perfect.

from the end of the hearing - there was a lot that preceeded this exchange. She was already set up by Whitehouse and you are looking at the fall where the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee tells her that she is in trouble.
by inclusiveheart on Thu Jul 12, 2007 at 06:46:51 AM PDT
You could tell how his anger increased during the hearing. His last set of questions was brutal and then he told her that even with Specter's attempt to negate a contempt charge she still might face one.
But, you could see the fury when he questioned her about her "oath to the President". They went through the whole thing, she agreed with him, and then she went right back to saying her oath was to the President. I thought his head would explode at that point.
And, she seemed to be more concerned about countering his annoyance than at realizing the true stupidity of what she was repeatedly saying.

earlier questioning where she said she too an oath to the president then she didn't remember what her employment agreement said, but that she took it very seriously.
Then she talked a lot about how everyone worked for the president
Then Whitehouse busted her on the Hatch Act getting her to admit that she gave briefings at agencies talking about specific Republican candidates' races.
Link to the Live Blog diary with the Whitehouse questioning -
Taylor's testimony yesterday was peppered throughtout with these statements of loyalty to the President, but until Leahy at the end set her straight about the Constution that was not her central focus. She is a true-believer.

Nah, didn't think so. Wonder when Bush's staffer's began to think their deeds might be a little, um, dirty. Obviously S Taylor knew that the truth would get her into trouble, lies would get her into trouble. Yet, at some point in time, I'm sure that she thought that anything she did in the service of her POTUS was beyond question, beyond reproach. So when did her 'reality' start crumbling?
