Failing to Prepare for Conflict, in this case War, can be an invitation for another war.
Preparing for War has a Diplomatic Purpose.

The art of fighting without fighting.

And he didn't practice that art by teaching himself how to collect stamps.
He practiced that art by teaching himself how to be what? The strongest. The best fighter.
by Edgar08 on Wed Aug 22, 2007 at 08:26:11 PM PDT
Only, we have never figured out the part about not fighting. I think weaker/lesser countries actually do a lot better at not fighting.
We don't have time for short-term thinking.

But it doesn't make what I'm saying incorrect.
There have been times when buildup did lead to Diplomacy and a Peaceful resolution. JFK and cuban missile crisis comes to mind.
by Edgar08 on Wed Aug 22, 2007 at 08:34:05 PM PDT
and war gives them power. Of course they always make the wrong choices, choices that average people would not make. JFK and the Cuban thing was a case of mutually assured destruction. Barring that, they are more than happy to send the populace into the meat grinder.

then we'll talk about real cynicism.

You seem to have a very short-sighted view of history. CF's observations prove themselves over and over again.
Our founding fathers were just as cynical cautious, which is why they did everything they could to assure a balance of power in our government.

jhe'd only sent the missiles to cuba so he could trade removing them for a promise not to again attempt to militarily remove Fidel.

My point is...if I can find the right words to make the point, that is :) :) :) that, a large person carrying a fearsome weapon is not by any means the only or exclusive manifestation of strength, and we make a serious mistake (IMHO) if we allow ourselves to think that it in fact is.
by Bhishma on Wed Aug 22, 2007 at 09:59:34 PM PDT
The concept of JeetKunDois that you only fight through turning your enemies aggression against him.
You never attack first and do all you can to avoid a situation where force is necessary.
If you already have overwhelming force (nukes) and the self-confidence to negotiate you never have to fight.
Flexing your muscles is aggression.
He practiced that art by learning how NOT to fight.

I think the Meerkats are way smarter than our current "administration". Something tells me that Flower would not have gone on vacation if she saw a memo that said "Bin Laden determined to strike in the US."

We can avoid most of the wars we're blundering into today with a diplomatic, as opposed to military, solution.
China has figured this out, and this is why they are eating our lunch in world opinion right now. They're going to replace us in a decade if we don't clean up our act.
