    and gave a stemwinder of a speech punctuated with the separatist cry "Vive le Québec libre!" (Long live free Québec!)

    It didn't take a Tito or a Saddam or a King Leopold to hold Canada together. Somehow Canada has muddled through. Actually better than muddled, if you look at the exchange rate. The loonie is nearly at parity with the U.S. dollar.

      Canada in fact has come very close to breaking up.  The results of the 1995 separatism referendum in Quebec were 49.4% in favor.  I easily can see Canada splitting into three or four parts, just like I easily can envision the United States someday annexing the country's resource-rich areas once we realize, as Kunstler says, that you can't run Las Vegas on wind power.
