  •  We can do more (10+ / 0-)

though we're trying.  We are a 2 Prius family.  We use no fertilizer, pesticide or herbicide or watering for the yard.  We have a native plant "lawn" with native flowers for the birds and butterflies.  We live near our work.  We have a comparatively small house, very downscale.  We have all compact fluorescent bulbs.  We have our water heater on a timer, so it only comes on once a day early in the morning (though we can turn it on any other time if we wish.)  Our house is caulked and weatherized.  We donate to environmental charities.

Still, we have fallen short in many ways. Dark roof replaced with dark roof, for aesthetic reasons.  Our house is surrounded by trees and not much sun hits the roof, hence, no solar water heater or solar panels for now.  Replaced central air/heat with a very efficient unit, but not the most efficient.  I try to buy as little as possible, but that is actually quite a lot.  I buy things from environmental or other charitable thrift shops when I can, but still they are things, and now even most used things are from China.

However small an individual's footprint, it is just one footprint.  The problem is of such overwhelming and terrible magnitude, shrinking my footprint to zero is not the answer.  I saw a cartoon which ridiculed environmentalists (Al Gore, for sure) for flying around the world talking about energy usage and global warming, but this is completely necessary, untli every person, government, corporation and power center in the world understands:  There will be no way of life period if we don't make radical and fundamental changes.
