I don't think it's such a bad thing as so many think. I think the candidate wars are a natural extension of the groups of passionate people we have here that see the high stakes of right now, and are fighting for what we think is the best course to the future.

Because Bob Johnson (the BET founder, not the Kossack) didn't make a backhanded swipe at Obama's past drug use at and official Clinton event with Hillary right there, and the Clinton campaign didn't send out an official email with a denial so weak as to be absolutely laughable, and this all didn't happen on the same day as her appearance on MTP where she tried to pretend like she was taking the high road.
The fairy tale quote was absolutely taken out of context, and there is something to those who argue her MLK quote was misinterpreted. Granted on those two points. But to say that there are no facts being brought up is to blind yourself, or to assume that we are too blind to see so pretty ugly campaign tactics.

When Bush was running - we here at Kos brought up his drug use -- so now with Obama why is it all of a sudden forbidden to mention?
Let us all agree that how these things are handled now will have a lot to do with how it will be when the democratic nominee will go against the gop nominee.
The Obama camp is not winning by pretending that talking about drugs is a bad thing - they should instead have taken Clinton on about the problems with drug use --
by this - say no to talking about it -- we end up looking like the GOP - because god forbid if sex or gays or race etc is discussed - we will all perish.

by sara seattle on Mon Jan 14, 2008 at 10:36:21 AM PDT
It's not. But when something like the Bob Johnson quote happens, and then the Clinton campaign tries to assert that it wasn't an attack on Obama's past drug use, it's condescending and insulting. If the Clinton's want to go there, then they should do so, and not hide behind their surrogates to do the dirty work while they plead for more high minded politics on MTP.

by claude on Mon Jan 14, 2008 at 04:42:52 PM PDT
I used to be pro-drug in my youth. In other words, I liked someone better if, like me, they did drugs. Now I'm neutral about drugs. But Senator Obama's youthful drug use is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it's something to be proud of. It shows that he hasn't always done everything he's told, that he thinks for himself, and that in spite of not being a kiss ass in high school, he had it in him to make it to president of the Harvard Law Review.
Taking drugs is in no way sociopathic. What is sociopathic is doing what it takes to become a billionare. Even more sociopathic is unleashing "entertainment television" on our society, not matter which color it's designed to appeal to.
So I think Senator Obama should just shrug off stupid allusions to his drug use. Who cares anyway? And most people wouldn't even have caught the nuance in the sociopathic billionaire's rant if Senator Obama's campaign hadn't pointed them out from the roof tops.
This "mom, he hit me first shit" is getting really tiresome, from both campaigns.
Instead of bringing people's attention to stupid shit in a billionaire's rant, it would be much more impressive if Senator Obama began right now to implement his bi-partisan approach to getting progressive legislation through Congress and signed by the president.
Frankly, I don't see how he can do it, but Senator Obama has my vote if he can convince me he'll get progressive legislation through Congress, especially if he manages to get Republicans to vote for it. And the way to convince us all of how awesome he is is if he actually, you know, did some of what he's talking about.
We need the war to end -- preferably on a bi-partisan basis -- right now, not in January of 2009. We need to remove the cap on the social security tax so we can fix Medicare and we would all be very impressed if Senator Obama would get that through the Senate on a bi-partisan basis, like now. And with a recession probably already here, it may only Senator Obama who has the ability to get his $250 tax credit through the Senate on a bi-partisan basis.
This kind of leadership would impress the hell out of me. Whining about someone implying you are, like me, a DFH, not so much.
This aggression will not stand, man.
by kaleidescope on Mon Jan 14, 2008 at 11:21:43 AM PDT
Who cares anyway?
Nobody cared about Bush's cocaine use, after all.
If it was Obama's campaign that made a big deal about it, perhaps they think they can get big gains from exposing racism. I actually don't think it will work the same as the expose' of sexism against the Clinton camps. Why? Because most people already accept that severe racism exists. Young women don't realize how much sexism exists.

but this is what was the recommended way to TR (this from an Obama supporter)- and let me quote this "kossack" - unfortunately this is what this proud site has sunk to.
qte:
Well, hell, there's a mechanism to deal with this
B------ is an astroturfer, tantamount in the opinion of some, as evidenced by a few troll ratings here, to a troll, you say? Well, all you have to do is get organized.
Just draw B------- into a protracted thread in an obscure position where not a lot of of his or her fellow travelers (i.e. Hillary supporters) are around to mod him or her up. Then, with the help of a few like-minded moderators, nail him or her with troll ratings all at once -- being careful to spread them out across comments and do it fast so there's no time for counter-moderation before autoban kicks in. For a target like B-------, I think you could pull this off, with email coordination, with as few as ten to fifteen moderators. You'd need to to get him or her to post about twenty to twenty-five comments with very little positive moderation and hit them all at once, though.
The autoban feature was designed for just this kind of thing, I'm sure. You just need to get fired up and ready to go. unquote

by emmasnacker on Mon Jan 14, 2008 at 12:20:35 PM PDT
If people abused the system in this way, they should be reported; other supporters of the same candidate have no power to police tens of thousands of like-minded users who might go too far, but the admins do.
I'm sick of the partisans on this site, those in all camps. I prefer Edwards, might end up voting for Obama in the primary, will end up voting for the Dem nominee in the general. People like this (and all three camps have way too many of them) make me sick.

It's always sad to realize that not everyone on "your side" is a model of rationality and critical thinking, and that some can display all the irrationalities and behavior that we condemn in the "other side."
In this case: unrealistic, blind idealization; hyper-defensiveness and need to feel victimized; black-and-white, "with us or against us" thinking ("Keith used to be good, but since he criticized my candidate, now he is EVIL!"); and simplistic dismissal of any valid criticism as motivated by "Irrational [Candidate X] Hatred."
