I made a comment in an earlier diary about the current Dem primaries and how the minute you mention anything about Obama, it's turned into a racism thing. But heaven forbid you bring up sexism as related to how Hillary is treated. If she complains she's being whiny. If she's strong, she's a bitch or a man-hater, if she cries, she's too soft.
Thing is, black men got the vote before women did. And a black man is much more welcome in the boys club than a woman will ever be, because when push comes to shove, a guy will choose a guy every time.
I've played sports and been chosen last - even though a better player than the guys picked before me. When I was little and tackled a boy - I was the one denigrated. I had somehow humiliated him.
Later, when playing a company co-ed softball in central park, our coach (a really good guy) put me at third. First thing the other team did was try to hit to third (hit it to the girl!). When I threw them all out, they soon stopped. But they were mad. How dare I?
And the company I worked for at the time? That sports magazine. Yeah, they had to hire minorities, and they had to hire women, but women had a really hard go of it. Ideas stolen, never brought into the conversation. And when it came time for the swimsuit issue photo show, you did NOT want to be in the same room with a bunch of guys getting a hard-on looking at the gorgeous half-clothed bodies of the models.
Women still do most of the work, especially when it comes to family. WE keep things running, and get little credit. Unfortunately, we don't understand the power we could wield if we chose to.
I could go on. All I can say is, we've come a long way, baby, but we have a long, long way to go.
