http://en.wikipedia.org/... Scroll down to Color... the Norwegian Fjord Horses are dun colored.
http://www.nfhr.com/... More on the colors from the Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry.
That pretty horse looks like it could be a mix, however, by the shape of the body.

in Astoria, Oregon, named Sonja. She's beautiful and my aunt drives her in a surrey at the Scandinavian Festival every summer. This one was built like her, but the colors were wrong. Thanks for the links.

Sonja pulls the Surrey while my aunt drives. :-).

Even the correct Norwegian name! :-)
Syttende Mai festival, complete with bunads? May 17 - equivalent to our July 4 - is a national holiday in Norway every year. Or a later festival?
I do lots of genealogy research in Norway. I have one lineage of my own traced back to ca 1620, and have been researching the lineages of Norwegian descendants of immigrants who married siblings of my parents, grandparents, and gr-grandparents.
by NonnyO on Wed Jan 16, 2008 at 04:40:08 PM PDT
is about 50-50 Swedish and Norwegian. The same aunt married a Finn (the horror!). We've never done any genealogy. NW Oregon drew a lot of Scandinavian immigrants in the late 1800s. The fishing & logging was probably a lot like home. There are such place names as Swedetown Road and my mom & sisters grew up in Svenson, OR. Their name was Akerstedt. She can remember going to neighbors and taking saunas back in the '40s. They used to tell Finnish jokes instead of polish jokes, back before things got so PC.
The festival is a midsummer festival. Here's a link, if you're at all interested. No photos of Sonja, alas.

may I email you? I have Ellis Island docs of great-grandparents supposedly descended from Jakob Luther, the brother to Martin Luther. Distant cousins have a family tree and a bible from 1725 but won't give it up or make copies "because it is too valuable"; typical relatives. In any case, I have the US information but that is were it stops, if you are willing to provide advice may I email you?

Welsh pony/horse seems to have a much thicker neck and chest than the one you have pictured. The one posted looks like it has the neck and chest of a Norwegian fjord horse, but the coloring is all wrong (according to the web site that says the purebreds have a dun coloring).
Wow, there are really some beautiful ponies shown in these web sites! :-)
by NonnyO on Wed Jan 16, 2008 at 04:21:12 PM PDT
short; sometimes below the cut-off between pony and horse. Welsh ponies are ponies. The "pony" in this picture is one damned tall horse of magnificent dimensions. He must be from one of the draft breeds that has the blood of the old European war horses. Big enough to carry a man in steel armor, they were also bread for looks and handsome action. Percherons are one of their descendant breeds, and often grey. This may be a Percheron. That's my guess, anyway.

I'm scrolling down thru the comments and my 11 year old daughter sees this pic and says, "Is that a pony? I thought you were looking at politics." I said, "Well, sweetie, this is buhdydharma, and he likes ponies." She said, "I like buhdydharma." lol
