As a resident of the Central Valley I was quite surprised (and pleased) this morning when I opened the paper and saw the endorsement for Edwards.
Fresno is a notoriously "conservative" area and the Bee's editorials often reflect this.
All I know is that my in-laws must have been choking on their oatmeal this morning when they opened to the Editorial page.
I don't understand it, but the vitriol reserved for Edwards is even greater than that directed at the Clintons. Whoo-boy don't get me started there!

He challenges their way of life. The "haves" have been pampered for quite some time now and they've grown accustomed to it. Think about how they've accused liberals for the past 3 decades of having an "entitlement" attitude. This is how THEY have become. They believe they are entitled to low capital gains rates, negligible corporate taxes, big business - government sweetheart deals, and cheap plentiful labor.
John Edwards threatens to take away some of their toys, and they're ready to throw a tantrum at the mention of his name. Makes perfect sense, just watch 3 year olds at play and you know all you need to know about Republican philosophy - "MINE!"

Clinton and Obama should conceed right now, because with a powerhouse like the Fresno Bee backing Edwards, endorsements from Wes Clark and Oprah Winfree are worthless.
This is going to turn around everything. It's all going according to Edwards' Plan.

Is that you?
Yes, unfortunately Edwards is not that great a threat to the establishment candidates. That doesn't mean that you have to be an asshole about it. Your sig line, for example, is garbage. Grow up.
And btw, its "concede", not "conceed". (The little dotted red line should give you a clue that maybe your alternative spelling isn't up to snuff.)

The endorsement from the Bee reflects Edwards smart, in depth policy ideas for farm and rural areas.
Oh sure, many will laugh at Fresno, after all, all they do there is grow your food.

We have a serious attrition in their population, whether that be allegorical for McClatchy journalists or descriptive of real Anthophila.
As a media historical aside, the McClatchy family also had a pretty serious electronic media empire in the Central Valley in the early to mid 20th century, including radio station KFBK, Sacramento, which is legendary for being the dark cave where Roger Ailes turned Rush Limbaugh from disk jockey to evil incarnate.
But they'd sold the station to Westinghouse by the time Ailes did his dastardly deed. Today, its just another prick in Clear Channel's iron maiden.

Because it comes at a time when almost the entire media has already written off Edwards as a viable candidate. Newspapers, even a tiny one, take this tradition seriously. This is a paper that's declaring clearly, if not loudly, that there is a third coice -- and a pretty great one, at that. If it's the signal to other papers that they are allowed to consider Edwards as a real candidate, it might not be the last.

endorsing Edwards in 2004 calling him the "most mature" of the candidates. He is again this time. I found the label "mature" very interesting since he was one of the youngest candidates at 50. (Al Sharpton was also 50).
I thought and thought about it. Edwards' campaign then and now is not about neediness. It's not about belonging to a club or needing approval. It's about a bigger cause of taking on injustice and trying to really fix our broken/rigged system.
As a person matures he gets better and better at wanting to get in other people's shoes. He gets better and better at listening. I see constant growth with Edwards. It probably comes from staying outside of politics. I think over and over about Tracy Flick from "Election". Brilliant analysis of the type of people who make politics a career. Occasionally though, we are blessed with people who are called to service. That's Edwards.

The BEE is a McClatchy paper. It's much better than the papers in Monterey or Santa Rosa, where I often visit. Fresno is definitely a red part of California, but there are plenty of Democratic votes here to be won. The campaigns should pay more attention to this area.

The Sacramento Bee endorsed Obama and McCain. Hmm, this is unusual for the McClatchey chain in the Central Valley. These papers usually operate in lockstep. Has the Modesto Bee endorsed anyone? I check today's edition and didn't see one.
Hmm, this is interesting, there's a story here somewhere. The Central Valley really could be Edwards country, too bad there's so little time left.

going by metro numbers, there are over 1,000,000 people in Fresno, and over 3 mil if you count the surrounding counties in its sphere of influence.
That is dwarfed by LA obviously, but compared to other so-called "important" regions in the country, it is not small potatoes by any means.
