As hard as it is, being on the campaign trail, they are afterall, still active Senators. And this is too important to miss.

I am getting very sick of how the campaign has been going. I would like to see the 2 Senators do something positive back in Washington.

that of the sitting senators, it was dodd who showed real leadership, both on fisa and on not funding iraq without timetables.
by Turkana on Wed Jan 23, 2008 at 09:17:06 PM PDT
Edwards has been calling for no funding without timetables for quite a long time too. Dodd may have been first, but...credit where it's deserved, and all that.

is not a sitting senator- which is why i was specific about that. we expect our sitting officeholders to use their offices to get things done...

This is the real problem I have with both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama - neither of them stand up to be counted when it counts. THEY DO NOT LEAD "OUT LOUD".
And this is the biggest reason why John Edwards has my vote on Super-Duper Tuesday - whether he's low in the polls or not, still in the race or not. He is always first in taking the right position for the people of this country, and having the right plan. I believe that's called "BEING A LEADER" - something we sorely need.
Thank you John Edwards, for having the courage to do what's right!
And thank you to Senator Dodd as well, for having the courage to stand up to Senator Reid and do what's RIGHT for the country, instead of what is politically expedient! You two would make a fantastic team for President/Vice President!

actly! to coin a phrase. ;-)
We are paying them a high salary to do a job! They should get their asses back to DC and do that job!
Not one person here could say to their employers, "Hey, I have this other project I need to work on for a while so see you later and be sure to keep sending that paycheck."
People, people, people...there is no excuse for them not being there! NONE!

support Obama gets on here that he has been Senator of the Year. Not quite, not even close.
But you have to ask of this Ronald Reagan worshiper, would Reagan filibuster this bill if he were a Senator. I don't think so and Reagan would have followed Obama's lead to confirm Condoleezza Rice, not join in the filibuster of Alito and trash the 60s and 70s and liberals.
Reagan and Obama are very much alike, except for the thousands of policy positions that Obama's advisers write on his websites, some of which are dead wrong.
Once again for all the Obama worshipers, I saw Obama on CNBC, talking to David Faber yesterday, say AGAIN that he will let the Bush Tax Cuts lapse on the wealthiest Americans which means, Mr. Change won't have any money for change until April 15, 2012. Another deceiver in Chief, just like Reagan! Just for your information, Obama said that in his interview with the Reno Gazette, which I have referred you to at least 10 times. I wonder how many Obama supporters have checked that out. In case you still want to see it, go to 32:46 at http://news.rgj.com/...

and I think you have no credibility in supporting Obama if you do not, listen to his tone about Reagan and the excesses of the 60s and 70s and listen hard for any caveats to his glowing envy of Reagan and whether or not he was referring just to electability. I think not.
Then towards the end, listen to his delusion about being the only one who can understand all the problems we have today. That's very interesting coming from somebody who copied most of his campaign literature from John Edwards and Al Gore.
Let's have some accountability for this guy who is filled with contradictions and DLC allegiance. Aren't any of you worried that he's not another Joe Lieberman or Harold Ford? His history of fighting for the poor may not be quite so accurate if his law firm was retained by Rezko. I think it is incumbent on his to challenge everything every candidate says and challenge their sincerity.
This is not a hit comment, it is a call for Obama supporters to give him the same scrutiny everyone else got. Don't be swayed by political idiots like John Kerry, whose sincerity in his support of Obama is in great question. Kerry screwed us once, this time let's be smarter, lets not blindly accept everything we hear from candidates we support.
by cpa1 on Thu Jan 24, 2008 at 04:25:34 AM PDT
It's funny that the campaign is about what they will do if elected President. I'd like to see them do more with the positions they have been elected to. How can we believe they will be any more effective as President if they have been ineffective as Senators?

But it's true.
They don't have to wait until they are President to start working for the change that they describe.
They could be speaking out against the war (and I'm sorry, but blocking funds for it is their only real mechanism, so they need to stop funding it) and they should be in Washington right now, this minute, helping Dodd. They have private planes, it's not like they couldn't be there in two hours.

were in the full swing of their 2004 campaign and they came back to DC to vote against funding for the war. I know pols miss votes and such during campaigns, but there are some instances like this bill...where campaigning should come second.

Edwards has pushed Clinton and Obama into a corner on this thing. They can agree with him all they want, but as sitting Senators, they can scoot back to Washington and help Dodd out.
If they're willing.
Are they willing to put their necks on the line over this? If they do, congrats on adopting Edwards-style populism. If they don't, their words are hollow.

And I call on Senator Obama to add his support to Senator Dodd's filibuster just as John Edwards has done. Also, he should have his support people stay apprised of developments and make plans to get Obama back to Washington for the vote. I doubt that his support/vote would be enough to carry the day, but it could force Sen. Clinton into taking a similar position, so as to not lose more support from those of us who still care about trivialities like the Constitution and such. I know this may sound like dominoes now, but Clinton seem to hold some "sway" with the Senate "Leadership," particularly the brave and noble Majority "Leader" Harry Reid. Obama is only a few States away now, and could get to D.C., and to the floor of the Senate fairly quickly. If he's got to miss part of the day campaigning, a few appearances, or whatever, then so be it. People will understand. If anyone here works on or near the campaign, please pass this along!

Their votes will be crucial for staving off Cloture votes, which means they need to get back to DC for a while. Its a tough choice for a candidate in the middle of a close primary fight to make, but I hope these folks do the right thing.
After that they need a leadership election to replace the Senator from Nevada, as he seems to have become incapacitated and unable to continue in office. I think the diagnosis is an acute case of moral blindness.

And that goes for Dem candidates and Rep candidates. Who is actually doing the work of a Senator, Governor, or House Rep? This endless campaigning must be killing them all. Good on there, Mr Edwards, get this message to the loudest microphone as soon and as long as possible.
by JohnB47 on Wed Jan 23, 2008 at 09:14:07 PM PDT
And our majority is being rendered less effective.
You know, if these guys don't scoot on back right now, this could be a defining moment in the race. Or let me say it ought to be. Edwards hasn't really left them a choice, other than to do the right thing.
Today should be... interesting. And although as an Edwards supporter I'd love some extra moral high ground, honestly? I'd really rather that Clinton and Obama went to work today and helped out on this issue. It would be way better to have the people protected than to get extra brownie points for my preferred candidate.
And that's been part of Edwards' message, loud and clear. It's time to really fight.
