Such a simple, brilliant idea: get rid of the cliched, sentimental, piano-and-swelling violins, "morning in America"-type background music that usually makes every political TV ad in America sound exactly like every other political TV ad in America.
That kind of crap music became a cliche a long, long ago - even a self-parody. Yet most political campaigns keep mindlessly cranking it out. Why? Perhaps because they're run by a bunch of geeky squares with no ear for music? (Sorry, just a wild guess.)
Why this new Obama ad is magnificent:
1. Good guitar, good riff, recorded without too much compression, and edited to leave in that little "clam" at the beginning - all of which is great, and gives it that honest, unvarnished indie-rock sound.
2. Filmed in black & white, with the gritty look of honest realism, yet still graphically sharp-edged enough to look stylistically modern.
3. Well-chosen verbal riffs from Obama's speeches, compressing his message brilliantly, so as to suggest WHY the "hope" thing matters (it's not just feel-good rhetoric, it's a philosophical stance with implications in every aspect of public policy).
4. Shows Obama looking alive, awake, full of energy, cheered on by people of all demographics. How can McCain compete with a force like this?
5. Three words on the screen at the end: "HOPE CHANGES EVERYTHING." Brilliant, absolutely fucking brilliant. The perfect response to any cynic who might ask: "What is this emotional, empty-headed 'Hope' thing Obama keeps talking about? Hope for what? Anybody can say 'Hope.' Why is hope so important?" Answer: because it CHANGES EVERYTHING, in every aspect of public policy.
6. The B&W ad ends with a sudden, unexpected flash of color - like a sunrise.
This may be the best political ad I've ever seen (though I admit I'm still mighty fond of those other ones that show Mike Gravel starting a fire and throwing a rock into the pond).

The YouTube description says it was made by Obama supporters~~

from the Obama campaign.
The logo at the end is not the official one, and there's no Barack voice-over saying "I'm Barack Obama, and I approve this message."
I haven't consulted youtube.com, but I think this is another user-submitted video.
But I agree with others here; it's very good.

$25... Thanks for this diary and inspiring us all to give. According to the homepage, it says their goal is 500,000 donors by March 4, and have more than 400,000 already. Is this true?

$50 to Obama.
"Yes we can"
I notice the diaries claiming Obama supporters are going overboard. I agree to a point.
But people must understand, based on the crap of the last 8 years (make that 16), we're tired of Bush and Clinton and divisive politics. I want the most progressive candidates in office that we can get. The way to do that, is to win elections and prevent Republicans from occupying those seats. Then we worry about better Dems.
The Senate under Harry Reid is horrible. Think of the chances of getting additional Senators on Barack's coattails. We'd win some with Hillary, more with Barack.
Enough rampling, got to work.

I voted for Obama in Maryland (although it was on one of those Diebold machines - we've got to get rid of them).
Then I went and donated to Obama. I was going to give $5.01 to honor Lincoln's birthday and Obama being from Illinois, but ended up giving $105.01 instead.

Going from 5.01 to 105.01 is awesome. I just donated last week, and will donate again tomorrow (waiting for a check to clear). I don't think I can do as much as 105.01, but you have inspired me to do more than I had intended. Thanks.

...breaking it down by Congressional District. Admittedly, it's by a Obama blogger but it's extraordinarily fair and balanced.
