I think people total missed the point of the ad you are so annoyed with, Hillary Clinton is not a rock star, none of them are, they are politicians.

Young people want to be treated as adults, with the same respect as anybody else.
The minute you pander to them -- with "Hillary Rocks", or with dropping references to things that "The Kids Like", such as Guitar Hero, you've already lost them, because you're essentially talking down to them.
The youth vote doesn't want gimmicks; it wants to be respected.

it is clearly an ad targeting youth. if her message is as you say but nobody gets it in its target audience clearly there is a problem.

VH1 behind the music doesn't target youth, it's for middle age hipsters.
I get how they missed but I still think the spirit of the ad is great. Just my opinion.
