After you posted it in the NOLA music diary yesterday, I looked up the link on Youtube and found out that John Brunious from Preservation Hall Jazz Band last week. I was devastated.
Just two months ago, I thought I was on my way to organizing the best fundraiser/political event of my life. And in one morning, it all fell apart leaving me to pay a huge penalty with the band's management. I had hoped to fix this mess of a fundraiser and get the band back here. And now John's gone. Even if PHJB does make it here, John is gone and the band will never be the same.
Like life, political activism is such a roller coaster sometimes. Two months ago, I woke up on top of the world, but in the span of 30 minutes, I couldn't breath from all of the debt I found myself buried under. I can only imagine that so many formerly happy residents of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast feel the same way.
Besides my family, only two things kept me going when I wanted to avoid the computer and not answer my phone- Barack Obama and Gilda Reed. So if Gilda can inspire me from hundreds of miles away, I can only imagine what she can do for New Orleanian residents and progressive activists who desperately need someone to keep them inspired in the face of what this country's been through the last several years.

Politics is all about that rollercoaster. The ride can be the most wonderful of all time sometimes. People like Gilda give me hope and inspiration on a daily basis. So long as we have those people along on the ride I plan to stay on the trail.

And through no fault of your own, your world was turned upside down. The analogy you made is so applicable to the trials of Katrina/Rita survivors. I hope things are looking up for you and I am so thrilled that I played a small part in helping you pull out of the funk.

You touch lives in ways that give people real hope. That is a gift for all of us.

Trying to make something happen without any connections or money is a gamble. Even though I thought I had covered my bases, it turns out that apparently I hadn't. So it's back to square one, but this time with the lessons learned the hard way.
It'll just make it that much sweeter when I do pull this off! :)

way. I am sorry you had such a tough time, blueintheface. May the blessings of life be yours from this day on.

I wish I could contribute to Gilda or even participate in the diary-athon because I'm rooting for her--but I've other stuff going on now that's been keeping me distracted from focusing on more important things that need to be focused on....

too. Your struggles lend all the more importance to the election of people like Gilda to Congress. We cannot allow our nation to continue to sink into oblivion. We deserve better.
I hope life returns to an even keel soon. Best of luck to you and yours.

There's a really driven Type A person here at work who doesn't get my more laid back southern approach. Of course his response to the video would probably be the same shocked look that I got when I told him "prioritize - this crisis matters, those don't - they can wait until tomorrow".
Thanks for the link nolalily.

I love your expression.
this crisis matters, those don't
That pretty well makes life a simple affair once one learns the difference between what matters and what does not.
