We can joke about it in 2016. Right now, this is not funny.

And it's not intended as joke. I'm quite serious.
Please explain why it's laughable to you?

the Oscars on this very subject: Gaylord Tittler in his 1944 Presidential Run...
No, call me an old grandmother if you want, but this is truly tasteless and a bad idea.

There will be no concealing the man's name.
Why bother being too concerned about it? I'm a little disappointed in myself for even caring about that brain damaged talk radio host. I mean brain damaged for real. The guy can't speak below a yell.

Can't think of many more sore. Immigration may rank up there on that scale.
I'm not making jokes, and I don't think the recent pattern of taking political cues from comedians is all that useful either.
Besides, it was a cheap joke from Stewart, relying on the "gay" and "tit" references for a good portion of the comedic effect, such as it was.
I'm not trying to be funny. Maybe that's one reason you didn't find it amusing.
I understand you feel it is tasteless and a bad idea, but you haven't told me why you feel that way. Should we let a beautiful Arabic word and traditional name remain a hateful slur and leave it at that?

and rub it into the faces of the (supposedly) redeemable independents that we're trying to attract to our cause?
Heck, lets go get some gasoline while we're at it and a few boxes of matches.

There is no doubt at all that you could wage a hateful scorched-earth campaign with anti-Islamic sentiment. That's exactly what you are describing: "rub it into the faces" and let it burn. But I must point out that this is exactly the right-wing noise machine is doing, and will continue to do. We need to take this hateful weapon out of their hands and use it to heal.
The difference is tone and intent; tone conveying intent. We all know how easy it is to misunderstand irony and sarcasm online (!!!) because we don't have the normal conversations cues -- facial expression, posture, voice modulation that would normally tip us off about the speaker's intent.
But we can, with patience, overcome the hate.
