Thanks Jillian, I just submitted my comment as follows:
This term "naturally raised" apparently even confuses the butchers. I had a recent experience with a grocery store that opened in the building of a favorite local store that had closed. A former vegetarian for nearly 20 years, I only purchase grass-fed beef and when I asked the butchers whether they had any, they directed me to the "naturally raised" beef they carried. I was surprised because it was so much cheaper than what I had been buying at Whole Foods, but took the butchers at their word at first. Then one day I saw a pamphlet on that brand, took it home and read it to learn that the beef was just standard corn-fattened beef that everyone carries. I felt extremely angry and upset. I went back to complain to the butchers, but they didn't care at that point because the store was already going out of business and moving across town. I do not think they intended to mislead me, but were apparently just ignorant about what grass-fed beef means. We need labels that everyone can understand. Stop trying to foist inferior products on the public by deceptive labeling. It will only make us angrier when we learn the truth. At this point I will no longer purchase beef that is not specifically labeled grass-fed, and if it gets down to it and we can’t depend on the government for honesty in food labeling I can stop buying beef altogether with no problem.

And that was just perfect. Hopefully, a real human with a brain will read your comment somewhere along the line during the process at that agency; and maybe a 'light bulb' will come on and they'll say "Hey, wait a minute..."
:)
But unfortunately, the Bushies are still running wild in that agency...

Sorry to hear that your local store closed. Have you checked LocalHarvest to see if there's another place somewhere in your area?

Yeah, good thing I saw this on the Enviros Digest today and I hope someone will rescue it. Took me about five minutes to write that because I've been so miffed ever since that experience, it just rolled right off the top of my head.
Some of us have been voting with our pocketbooks for 30+ years and that's what gave us organic produce available to almost everyone these days. Not hard at all for for me to boycott beef or any other product that is raised unsustainably and without regard to the feelings of other species. It's time they realized that, especially in the internet age, they can no longer pull the wool over our eyes. ; )

Forget to mention, yes, I can go to one of 3 Whole Foods in my local area, but I know not everyone has that kind of availability. I could also order direct from local producers but I can't quite consume enough to make that work at this point.

Have you looked into maybe forming an informal sort of "co-op" with neighbors to make that work? There are almost certainly some other "lost" people out there who sense things are very wrong with our "food" system; but don't have the time or resources to do anything about it...
Do you think that's a possibility where you are?

I'd miss most of these myself if I didn't get the emails...

Thanks, Hardhat, I'll do that -- re the D Kos Foodies & Farmers. I'm actually immersed in the final stages of a doctoral dissertation right now, so little time for organizing, but yes, I do hope such community is in my future.

And if you ever do get around to it, and need some advice on organizing, etc...
You know where to look now.

totally illustrates the exact problem with this bullshit labeling measure.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I figured butchers, of all people would know the difference. Again, thanks to Jillian and D-Kos for alerting me to this urgent action need.
