  •  Real ID is a waste (7+ / 0-)

Why not just take DNA samples and bar code us?

Let us devote to unselfishness the frenzy we once gave gold and underpants.

my license is good for 5 yrs. It's not up until 2011, IIRC.

So what were they planning to do - force everybody in the country with a currently VALID state issued ID to get a new one?

What about passports? My passport doesn't expire for a few more years, were they planning on forcing people to get new ones of THOSE as well?

I can see requiring some standard info on state IDs, and/or some common methods of verifying some info.

But requiring technology that is not only expensive, but totally UNNECESSARY, and at STATE expense, is ridiculous.

      •  Real ID Re-enrollment (0+ / 0-)

Your driver's license should be good until its expiration date, mmacdDE, as long as you live in a state that has received an extension from the Department of Homeland Security (so far, that's any state but Maine, New Hampshire and South Carolina).  However, Real ID will ultimately require everyone to go to the DMV and re-enroll - present all your source documents and have them verified.

Your passport should cover you on airplanes for now, but make no mistake, Real ID is a national ID card and if ever implemented, will be required for more and more basic functions in society.  That's why we need to stop this invasive and - you're completely right - unnecessary program.
