Have you seen the 100 mil diet? The idea is for everything you eat to come from within 100 miles of where you live. Its the BEST way to reduce the CO2 impact of the food supply.
Organic is great. Local is great. Organic local is the best.

Just got back from my farmer's market, actually :)
Listening to Harry talk about the history of the standards made it seem like they were created to allow the big industrialized companies a way IN, which they otherwise wouldn't have had. By codifying a standard, then they had a set of rules that they could follow w/o fully subscribing to organic philosophy and thus they could still keep their focus on their bottom lines. My personal standard isn't "certified organic" - I want to meet the farmer myself thankyouverymuch. Only when I can't do that, then I look for certified organic - and the less processing, the better. And the less packaging the better too.

it's tough in Minnesota in the winter, my percentage of local goes way up in the summer, amd my lovely co-op the Wedge tracks it right on my receipt.

food is local? That is AWESOME!!!
Ever thought about home canning? A buddy of mine has gotten really into it. During the summer he makes up a ton of stuff like tomato sauces, soups, pickles, and pesto - then he gets local meat, eggs, and cheese in the winter and eats that along w/ what he canned in the summer and stuff like pasta. He does this in WI so it can't be much colder than where you live.

used to get by being lazy when I had a big deep freeze in my former house. It was old, and a pain in the butt to get in the basement in the first place, so I left it with the house.
Whether I get back to freezing or canning ( mostly I've just done jam before)it will require some adjusting of my storage space and my schedule in August.

he gets a lot of his food in bulk during the summer from Harmony Valley Farm in Viroqua, WI. They are at the Minneapolis farmers' market I believe so you could probably cash in on their bulk deals. They do one or two a week, you order by Wed and then pick up at the market on the weekends.

and get a 10% discount. But I have some storage issues with that too. Just having a big bag of nettles last summer strained my cupboard space :-(
