I'm wondering what's holding the fundamentalist power brokers to McCain. At this point I have to think it's merely the off chance that he might pull off a win.
If this changes in upcoming months, as looks likely to me, the fundamentalists might abandon the sinking USS Straight Talk and float their own candidate. That way they can point the finger at "other" Republicans for choosing McCain and losing the White House.
Fundies retreating into self-deluded Baptustans, plutocrats dividing their money between corporatist Republicans and Democrats, libertarians pursuing crackpot Quixotes, and cloth-coat old-style Republicans muttering bleakly about government: back to the good old days!
Hanoi didn't break John McCain, but Washington did.
