    other -

I am constantly in search of new music, authors, artists and the like.  I love stimulating conversation and I tend to pursue a life full of these things, as opposed to well, things.

I'd much rather have a handful of friends over for wine and to make supper than I would to go to the mall and buy new shoes.

But, that's just me and how I've always been.

I champion intellectualism, education, library-usage, academia and research.  I always will.

But that makes us anomalies, throwbacks, freaks. Brief anecdote:

Sitting in the lunch room at my former employer about 6 months ago. Got my nose in a book, quite happy in my little world. A coworker (not one I knew well, just a face in the hall) walks over.

      "Readin', huh?"

"Yes." Nose goes back in book.

"You're always in here, readin' a book. You surely do read a lot a books."

"Yes." Nose goes back in book a second time.

      "Why?"

The fact that a human being would need to ask this question horrified me.

I think in a lot of school systems people are basically trained not to love learning and not to love reading.  There's too much competition, too much judgement, too much regimentation and boredom, not enough encouragement, not enough sense of the wonder of exploring the world.  Sometimes the child's own sense of wonder keeps them going anyway; sometimes not, especially if they don't have reinforcement at home.

Maybe your coworker was just genuinely curious about what you get out of reading.
