Not much more to say but "wow."
But I'm now on the second disc of Back to Mono, the Phil Spector box set, and while he's apparently a horrible human being, the man was a genius of pop music.
And I don't know how Martin Scorsese would have been able to do most of his soundtracks if it weren't for Phil Spector.
The revolution will not be televised, but we'll analyze it to death at The Next Hurrah.

The whole "Wall of Sound" thing was revolutionary. But, yeah, he sucks as a human being.

...who wrote those jingles for that cheap rip-off soda company?
You know:
Shasta cola hits the spot Ties your belly in a knot Tastes like vinegar Looks like ink. Shasta cola is a stinky drink!
That Shastakovich?
--Actually, great post, with a wonderful trip down memory lane. And the lyrics above are ripped off from Woody Guthrie who in turn ripped them off a once-famous Pepsi ad.

I recently got "Phil's Spectre: a Wall of Soundalikes," which as you can imagine is a CD full of `60s recordings done in Spector's style but by different producers. Really good stuff.
I'm at work so I can't provide a link, but I found it at Amazon. There's three volumes, I believe; I have volume one, and intend to get the others soon.
Yes, he's a mad genius, and seems to be a pretty lousy person, but he must not have been all bad if Ronni Spector was willing to marry him in the first place.

I don't think the decade is what's important - some of that stuff cited from `36 was pretty hip for it's time, some of it STILL is.
Someone like Orrin Hatch actually makes me think of the late `50s/early `60s - except I'm reminded of someone like Mitch Miller, who was truly the least hip person of his time. According to him, Bob Dylan had absolutely no future in music.
Sing along with Mitch, everybody!
