A Democratic Congress and President can provide the money necessary to make these family planning programs work. And even in heavily Catholic countries in Latin America, people are more interested in their own quality of life than the dogma of their church--witness the dramatic fall in the size of families in Mexico in recent decades. If it can happen there, it can happen anywhere.

fall in family sizes here as well...coupled with poor church attendance and the dwindling number of priests ordained.

funding for family planning programs in this country as we're still fighting on whether we should teach kids about sex education or what to do about abortion and then there's that nice little gag rule that they want to continue from the overseas programs to the US.
You are absolutely correct that dogma doesn't mean education nor relieve the stress on the planet.
Although, isn't part of the decrease in family size due to a move from agrarian lifestyle into the cities and suburbs? Tough to have 15 kids in a 3 bedroom condo...

. . . the birth rate in the USA is approx 2.1 per woman, i.e, the replacement rate. Population of USA is growing almost entirely via immigration from less-developed countries. Please see my post, "Take a deep breath," on this diary.

I guess my completely hidden point :) was that we have an administration that won't provide money to agencies that have family planning clinics in 3rd-world countries unless they conform to a specific method of business. We're the Reproduction Mafia...that's right Rome...you're #2 now! :)
