by how many disaffected Republicans showed up to our Vote for Change booth this weekend in my very red state. I swear there were almost as many folks changing parties than there were folks registering to vote for the first time. What suprised me was just how enthusiastic they were in explaining why they were switching. Much of it had to do with our "presumptive" nominee. Yes, the promise of Obama was present before our eyes. Take that Mr. Limbaugh.

former resident of the other side of the fence I can say that so far this cycle I have been able to bring more than 20 new contributing republicans to the Obama campaign. This in TN-7 which incidentally is next door to MS-1. I have high hopes for Tuesday.

Good to hear that about TN-7, from TN-5.
I may be starting to go to church here in town soon (something I've not done in YEARS) and want to assess the situation with the people there to see how many of them are still Bush supporters and who has had the scales fall from his or her eyes and now supports a Dem, especially Obama. I'll report back my findings if they seem significant.

are a bit slower to change than others, sadly. Most of my success has sprung from the realizations of "fiscal conservatism", make our kids pay lots more for our spending today vs "tax & spend", living within ones means and growing jobs rather than deficits. And, strangely at first, that public health is more than a moral obligation, it is a national security necessity. Finally, that Al-Qaeda are the ones that attacked us and by changing our founding principals we are giving Al-Qaeda a propaganda victory. There is a marvelous quopte from William Webster, Director of the FBI during the Reagan administration that is priceless in this regard and I will be happy to share if you think it will help.

I am also trying to get my dad and a few other family members to open their eyes, and anything will help. I'm up against Faux News, which I swear is the only channel my dad gets with his satellite dish, or else his tv is broken and stuck to that channel.

goes like this:
Behind all the political rhetoric being hurled at us from abroad, we are bringing home one unassailable fact--[terrorism is] a crime by any civilized standard, committed against innocent people, away from the scene of political conflict, and must be dealt with as a crime... [I]n our recognition of the nature of terrorism as a crime lies our best hope of dealing with it.. [L]et us use the tools that we have. Let us invoke the cooperation we have the right to expect around the world, and with that cooperation let us shrink the dark and dank areas of sanctuary until these cowardly marauders are held to answer as criminals in an open and public trial for the crimes they have committed, and receive the punishment they so richly deserve.
William H. Webster, Director Federal Bureau of Investigation, October 15, 1985
Then I ask what is so American about skirting around our founding principals that have held us in such high regard by the world in order to give these very same cowards a huge propaganda victory over us. By making us alter our ethos even by the littlest of measures the terrorists win a huge victory. After all, it is a primary goal of terrorism to cause the targeted society to abandon the principals that the terrorists hold in such low esteem. Once one string gets the tug, more follow. I hope this is, in some small way, helpful.
