  •  After watching the rodent in Reagan's head (17+ / 0-)

come flying off its wheel time after time... his head bobbing from left to right, while the synapses in his brain misfired with long, awkward pauses of "dead-air" while making speeches, I'd have to say that, yes - age is an issue.

I recall practically screaming like Bill O'Reilly  at the television when Saint Ronny would appear - it was like the Emperor's New Clothes - everyone said he was "fine". But I didn't see "fine". I saw someone who was obviously struggling with simply thinking straight.

I recall questions being shouted at Reagan by the press while he was at his ranch. He looked confused so Nancy whispered the answers in his ear. (I'm not making that up)

Would you want the captain of a Jumbo Jet in which you're flying to be in his mid-70's and just a wee-bit "addled"? How about your heart (or more appropriate, brain) surgeon? Then why on earth would someone want their POTUS to be so old it's obvious they're not thinking clearly?

It's neither man's "fault", of course. But we'll have the option of voting for a guy who's at the top of his game, mentally-speaking and sharp as a tack, or one who is obviously struggling with the simplest of concepts, nearly six months before the election. We'd live with the consequences long after.

Lastly, the provisions in the Constitution are very murky regarding the removal of a POTUS from office who cannot perform his duties because of mental incapacitation. Just who would walk up, tap him on the shoulder and say "Sorry Mr. President, but you no longer have the brains to pour piss out of a boot and need to retire to 'Shady Acres Rest Home' now!" It'll take more than a crow-bar to get his ass out if he ever gets in.

    •  Hmmm. (8+ / 0-)

Assuming that the fundies get their way with McCain's cabinet (and why wouldn't they?), I can see a quick session of the cabinet declaring McCain incompetent.  Voilá - President Huckabee!

That would be quite a fitting end to McCain's career.

      •  Indeed... But I'm curious... (3+ / 0-)

Any particular reason for the TR? Or I guess I should say the HR? I believe after quite a few  years of coming here, that's the second one I ever received.

I certainly don't blame either Reagan or McCain; my father is almost 89 and gets confused quite easily. Sometimes he's pretty sharp, but other days, well... not so much.

I sure realize that it's not his fault, though. I'm the one who takes care of him. And I certainly realize no one can help it if either Alzheimer's or old-age induced dementia sets-in.

My concern about a POTUS who has questionable mental health is how difficult it would be to remove him or her from office and (in Reagan's case) the media's willingness to live in denial about what seemed so obvious - at least to me.

It was not my intent to denigrate people with these conditions but to underscore how important it is that we don't have someone with these problems in the Oval Office.

after the depredations of the Bush regime we are already teetering on the edge.  We don't need any more of this.  And we don't deserve it, even if a majority of "us" votes for him.
