Anybody want to organize a sock drive?

As part of the vast left-wing net knitters conspiracy...well, give me a few hours to put a site together.
Also, a link to the article in the paper or any other point-of-contact for coordination would be most helpful. I googled and came up with this: Thomas Hardy Graham VFW Post 7059, but I don't know if it is the correct org.
If I know the online knitting community (and I do), these poor buggers will be swimming in superwash handknit wool socks before they know what hit them.
Is what I am doing *right now* leading to happiness?

and I am looking for the VFW post, although it is likely there is only one in Farmville, VA
Thanks. Anything else I can do?

tomorrow and buy 100 pairs of white sox. I will deliver them on Thursday.

I was hoping you would see this.
Thanks again.

The link I posted has an email contact on it for the local VFW. I sent them an email. (Weirdly, the linked email address is different than the name of the link on the web site, so I sent to both, and we'll see what happens.)
I figure that in order to coordinate a relief effort, we need to know:
I'll let you know what answer I get.
Realistically, I think the answer will not be forthcoming until at least tomorrow.
So, I'm thinking that once the answer is known, and an "action" web page is created, another diary is in order. Thoughts?
by jbdigriz on Tue May 13, 2008 at 04:14:50 PM PDT
that you are participating.
I have been upset about this and missed a few items I should have included.
That goes for everyone on this diary, thanks.

Diary this when you have info. We ought to be able to inundate them in a tidal wave of socks.
BTW what are best? Wool, cotton, ? I know some people find wool uncomfortable.
by marketgeek on Tue May 13, 2008 at 04:27:20 PM PDT
the most important thing is that they not have tight elastic around the top. It's a bit late in the season but cotton "rag" boot socks with just one little elastic around the top might work. I have several pair that I wear all year round because they are comfortable and don't make my leg hurt/swell.
You're right about the wool. If they are indeed bedridden, they don't need wool and it is irritating to some. (Slightly OT: if you are sensitive to wool, wear it over cotton or another natural fabric and it will not irritate. If you wear it over nylon, as in a wool skirt over a nylon slip, it will make you scratch your skin off!)

I'm thinking of calling the hospital directly tomorrow, too.
by jbdigriz on Tue May 13, 2008 at 09:34:46 PM PDT
This is the link to the Richmond VA Hospital.
Mostly for me to retrieve tomorrow...

If you will post a link to where. Or donations if there is an organization out there who is helping. The idea that the defense department can't afford socks for Vets is absurd. What wretched bean-counter came up with that?

just sayin'. But ninepatch does a whole lot of work sending care packages to our deployed troops.
Depending on where they are deployed, they have requested SOCKS in there care packages, also.

it is always listed at the bottom of the Diary. Or volunteer at your local VA.

This needs to get higher visibility so a coordinated effort can be launched.
Thanks for informing us, thanks to those who have put together E-mails, and thanks to Granny Doc for buying socks!
