He's the only Republican whose name has been floated for VP who doesn't make me cringe. I'll say that. Maybe a cabinet post is most reasonable, though I wouldn't rule him out for VP.
He doesn't bring much regionally, though, since Obama will land all of New England.
I'd rather see Richardson or Sebelius.

What other U.S. Senator is a farrier?

The Democratic party nominee for Vice President should be a Democrat.
Chaffee seems to be a nice guy, right on most of the issues, a fine choice for the cabinet, but not Vice Presidential timbre for the Democratic Party.

The principal job of vce-President is to become president if something, God forbid, happens to the President.
It's fun to tinker around with the idea of various persons becoming Obama's running mate, but keep in mind that the principal job of a vice-president is to become president if, God forbid, something were to happen to the president. Republicans in other positions, fine; Republicans in the Cabinet, fine; a Republican as vice-president with a Democratic president--never!

He's an independent now? Fine. But until he signs on as a Democrat, I wish him well, but in the words of my dear, departed mother - not near me/not on the national Democratic ticket! This is nuts!! We have soooooooo many Democrats highly qualified to be VP - we should bypass them in some half-assed desire to be what - apolitical???
Nuts!!

Heard him interviewed for an hour on public radio and was very impressed. He was discussing his new book, "Against the Tide: How a Compliant Congress Empowered a Reckless President." But I wonder if picking an ex-Republican would so anger many Republicans that they'd turn out to vote when otherwise they might have stayed home. It would be rather like if McCain picked Lieberman as his running mate. Like waving a red cloth in front of a bull. It would be great if Obama could pick someone who's universally admired as brilliant, likable, honest, non-controversial, and handsome. I haven't a clue who that would be, but I'm thinking....

Lincoln Chafee will rub for Governor of RI as an independent in 2010... Gov. Carcieri (R-RI) is term limited out of office then and Chafee would be a direct frontrunner...
