  •  Keep hope alive for DC, Guam, P.R., D.R.... (3+ / 0-)

Think about it, so many US territories and protectorates without a clear future.  It really is a Hope and Justice concern. Surely we can work out hopes that might include adding 7 new states to our blessed Union!  There may be a special vision latent in this alledged faux paux!

Ok, 51 might be ok too.  Isn't it time to figure out how best to include Washington DC's citizens under a valid statehood option? The 'federalized' areas can stay in their own wierd limbo classification, but the rest of the city and its citizens seem to deserve equal representation in our national government.  It doesn't seem right to deem them as outside the Union of States.

How can the rights accorded by the Constitution to the several states and it's citizens be guarenteed to DC citizens otherwise?  I suppose we can just keep trusting Congress to get around to legislating these...or more Executive rules to be passed...

and pragmatically, that might be tough to push past the GOP, since that would guarantee 2 Dem senators.

I do think that DC needs, at a bare minimum, to have a voting representative in the House, though.  That's very doable by the 2010 census reapportionment.

even though it has a larger population than 4 states, because everyone knows its two senators will be Democrats. The GOP is never going to give the Dems that advantage, and since it takes 2/3 of both houses and 3/4 of the states (IOW, a Constitutional amendment) to make DC a state, I'm afraid it's going to stay a colony.

Even getting DC residents a voice in the presidential elections took an amendment (XXIII).

the actual federal district, the area with the majority of the federal buildings, stay separate. Everything else should go back to the state that gave it in the first place.

VA already took back their piece (years and years and YEARS ago). MD should take back most of theirs.

      •  The ignomy of having to endure more democracy... (3+ / 0-)

why can't we force this vote upon them???

It'd be priceless to see them stone wall this, and for it to be made plain they are fighting tooth and nail to maintain taxation on DC citizens without representation.  No Congressional representation for You, undeserving DC citizen!

Our D squad leaders should consider offering legislation or an amendment to the budget exempting DC citizens from federal taxation until they are represented in Congress.  Or that all federal taxes collected from DC must be spent in DC, per the direction of their elected city representatives.

Either way, actions like these could help America realize that GOP agendas are never really good for the majority of us, let alone a minority.  And if one can't get a majority in our Nation's Capital properly recognized and represented, how much the worse appears their crime?!

if D.R. means Dominican Republic, it isnt neither territory nor protectorate. D.R. is a republic. Now, P.R., Puerto Rico is a territory, American citizens since 1917. Both countries you may know, are neighboring islands in the Caribbean.
