most popular last year. My son is 10 years old, and there weren't many Ians around then (part of the reason I picked it). There are a few Ians in his school, but not in his homeroom class. When teachers on the playground need to refer to an Ian, they say "Ian C." or "Ian O."
It's nothing like the college classes I teach, where I routinely have 3 "Mikes" in a 30 person class.

EMILY in a few years, if not already. My niece got that one a couple of years before the BIG Emily-wave hit... saw something yesterday, Emily has been the #1 girl's name since 1996 !!!
If you're interested, I can find you some Old Norse E-names, in a couple hours, when the husband is up, 8-) Especially if you're interested in classical "viking" period ones and not the modern scandinavian versions thereof.
We picked "Ari" for Ari the Lawgiver (last of the great law-speakers, Iceland, ca. 1000 CE). In Old Norse, Ari means eagle; pronunciation is cockney-Harry-without-the-h -- 'Arry, with the accent on first syllable. (Paternal line also goes Harry (grandfather), Gary (father), so Ari really fit that!) It does get mistaken for Hebrew Ari (the lion, pron. Aah'-ri), Aaron or Eric, in introductions, but that's minor.

name, you can't forget Egil/Egill, for Egil Skallagrimsson, one of the great heroes of the sagas, who was personally responsible for such a bad-ass curse that it drove the king of Norway out of the country and into exile.
Regardless, congrats!
Carry the battle to them. Don't let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive and don't ever apologize for anything. -Harry S. Truman
by Shadowmage36 on Tue May 13, 2008 at 01:22:17 PM PDT
He's actually kind of a problematic role model -- he WAS a great poet, one of the greatest. The "Head Ransom" he composed that changed Eirik Bloodaxe's mind about chopping off HIS (Egil's) head. (Eirik was in exile from being King of Norway, which Egil had had something to do with.... )
He was ALSO notably bloodthirsty even for a "Viking" -- killed his first person at the age of ten; had such a bad temper no one wanted to play games (esp viking field hockey, or "norse stickball") against him; stubborn as a rock; did go bad-viking, esp raids on Denmark with killing and stealing when he got annoyed at the King of Denmark. And for "petty and spiteful", his final act was, when the women of his house got tired of putting up with him, he took his treasure chests and a couple of slaves, went out and had the chests buried and the slaves too. And it's never been found (the treasure) -- probably.
For a humorous, yet accurate take, there is the wonderful Norse of Course (Read it out loud, it's even better that way. I've heard the author's presentation!)

it's Ari the LEARNED (smack forehead with palm) -- Himself is up now...
skipping mythologicals and translated "foreign" names, there aren't many ON "E" names; and leaving off ending r's...
Ebbi Egill Egunaldr Ei(dh)* Eilif Eiligni Einar Einri(dh)i Eirik Eldgrim (eld prefix = fire) Eldjarn Elli(dh)agrimm Elli(dh)i Ellik Elling Emund Engli Erlend Erli (a diminutive, also used as a name) Erling (diminutive of the title "Earl") Erlyg Ermund Erp (like Wyatt Earp; pronounced air-p)) Evang Eybjorn (island bear, ey prefix = island) Eyfri(dh) Eyjar Eyjolf Eylaug Eymund Eystein Eyvand Eyvind Ey(th)*jof Ey(th)or
*Note: there are two "th" sounds in the scandinavian languages, old and new. there is the "hard" th, like in "those", and the "soft" one, like in "thing". Hard th is given as (dh) below, eth; soft is given as (th), thorn. Eth (dh) can be spelled in English as "dh", "d" or "th"

We always call my son Ian "E" for short. He'll probably have spelling difficulties his whole life! It's not nearly as common as Ethan, and if you spelled it some other way like Eain, Eon, Ean, Eyon or Eion, maybe that would honor your relative. It's actually the Gaelic form of John, I believe.
