a Democratic SWEEP come November!
by phrogge prince on Tue May 13, 2008 at 10:30:33 PM PDT
...or start preparing mentally for a possible repeat of 1932?
Somehow, I'm starting to think that visualizing that kind of electoral sweep might have its value if we can do it without getting to complacent.

be careful of the parallels you cite....
WHOEVER is President will be walking into a shitstorm of epidemic proportions......
Iraq's a disaster and THEY will have to make the hard decisions due to W's stalling tactics....
The economy is a mess - FAR worse than being reported - with ALL major statistics being faked.... and Clinton DID play games here too so do you think Dems will own up to 12% inflation, 14% unemployment, NEGATIVE 2% GDP and an 18% ANNUAL increase in M3?
Record deficits will REQUIRE major tax increases and CUTS in spending.... Bush bankrupted the country, now someone's gotta play grown up. Problem is that the electorate is a bunch of spoiled kids that don't WANT to clean up their room or eat veggies..... just TRY and tell them that cheap gas is GONE.... and SHOULD be GONE.
I'll bet that reality will bite and the electorate will fall for ANY 'new' Repub promises after only 4 years of belt-tightening.........

If you've been paying attention to the latest global warming numbers, you know that if we don't put some massive new spending on replacing our energy infrastructures, there is serious question as to whether there is going to be a USA in 20 years. $4/gallon gas is a warning, and not an early warning. Rumor has it that it'll be $8 by election day.
Then, look at the $1.7T spending on civil infrastructure the ASCE is calling for to replace/maintain America's roads, bridges, sewers, and other unglamorous things we are going to need if we're going to keep doing business in America. What happens if we don't? Remember that bridge collapse in MN? Consider that a warning.
At this point, the two biggest things America as a nation pisses away money on are the War on Iraq and what passes for a national health care system. You know, the one that costs twice per capita what the rest of the First World is spending to provide 1/2 the access.

Bet on it. It's the fossil fuel, especially petroleum, industries' way of swaying voters. Worked in 2004.

It's beyond anyone's ability to control at this point, and it comes down to the dollar: The dollar is toast thanks to Duhbya's retarded policies, the most recent of which was printing 200 billion more of them for "economic stimulus." Oil will be $200/bbl by October. Nobody's lowering gas prices even if they want to.

when we remove many of the forces responsible for the rise in prices

The next president will have to be GREAT -- not just good. Even a great president will face a situation that will make the Great Depression look like a walk in the park. During the Depression we weren't utterly dependent on oil, and we weren't trapped in a war.

STARTED out poor - or were not all that far removed from being poor...... DIRT poor
That meant people KNEW how to do 'without' - they were used to it......
Can you picture what will happen if people are thrown into THAT level of poverty today? How well do you think people will cope?
In the Depression you had accountants, professors and former executives who willingly worked digging ditches for the CCC..... I know - I had family doing this.......
Not sure that too many of my overextended, in debt up to their eyeballs, yet living life to the 'fullest' neighbors will cope as well. We've become rather spoiled.... and oblivious as to how little most have in life.

Ever since I saw one of Charlie Cook's reports in 2005 showing a significant trend toward Democratic self-identification and away from the Republican party. That has only grown more pronounced since then.
The special elections are an excellent weather vane here. If the GOP can't defend Denny Hastert's seat, whose can they defend?
I am hopeful for a pickup of over 30 seats in the house and 7 or more seats in the Senate (best case) I'd love to see that continuous fillibuster in the Senate end.
