What strikes me about your story is that you felt that you had to defend Bush's cronyism and incompetence because you agreed with his policies. That's a pretty common Republican thing, it seems to me. But really, one could say I still agree with the war, and the tax cuts, because I think those were the right things to do for the country, but I don't think Mike Brown should be in charge of FEMA. But it seems like the Republican way is this all-or-nothing, No-Republican-can-do-wrong mindset.
You'll find on our side that we're not like that. We can agree with a politician's policies, and support those policies, and respect the politician, but still disagree with certain actions, and we don't have any trouble criticizing those actions.
In short, we don't subscribe to for-us-or-against-us type thinking. We have critical reasoning skills.
So. Welcome. We're glad to have you. And enjoy.

in other words, he might be a crook, but he's our crook, and don't ever say he's a crook in public. That's how I see the mindset, anyways.

at crooks. There is a long way between innocence and crookishness, and we understand that our so-called leadership is somewhere in the middle.
Welcome, we are glad you are here.

The questions are: how much, who gains and loses from it, and what's the impact on society?
With the Republicans, the gains are typically at the top of both individuals and institutions.
The top has been doing extraordinarily well really for 30 years.
