...for someone who's already registered 5 of his friends as Democrats this spring?

My 50 something hairdresser, here in Montana, has never registered/voted because 'one vote doesn't matter.' When he said this to me the other day, I said "Barack won by 7 votes in Guam" which really seemed to impress him. He's now all excited about registering and voting in our 6/3 primary. I'll check up on him and make sure he follows through.

I've been living in NC my entire life of 41 years. Never have I felt that dem presidential campaigns give two flips about winning here, because it required too much effort...well, the effort is here in the form of the people who LIVE here.
Like seeds in need of a little water, we dems from presidential red states simply need a kick start and an occasional visit and we'll do the rest.
Your diary about your friend states that more vividly than I could.
Let's do this thing, folks.
Again...Barack is cool!

In even the most conservative states, the margin between registered Democrats and Republicans pales in comparison to the margin of people who don't bother to show up. A Democrat can win even a traditionally conservative state like South Dakota or North Carolina if they awaken like-minded apathetics.

for a politician like Obama to reach my friends, whom I could never quite convince that voting impacted their lives directly, and that failure to vote, is, in itself, a choice.

I have been talking to local farmers recently, and elderly citizens; they only want to talk about Obama, and everyone says McCain is too old and I guess the Seniors recognise that its a tough job for someone of his age.
Remember I just said North Dakota. Not Vermont or Delaware, or even Maryland, I said North Dakota.

if women are supposed to vote for Hillary, and blacks are supposed to vote for Obama, aren't senior citizens supposed to vote for McCain?
Simple logic, no? After all, what are demographics and categories for? No, simple-minded logic, of course.

Not only did she vote in the primary (for Obama), but so did ALL of her friends, and her boyfriend, who in days gone by would surely not have voted. Change is in the air my friends!
by elwior on Sat May 17, 2008 at 05:20:49 PM PDT
one day recently and asked:
"Who are you voting for, Hillary or Obama?"
Notice how McSame wasn't noted at all? Notice how she knew the names of BOTH of our remaining contenders?
I asked her where this came from and she said that another boy in her class was asking everybody and she was curious about our (mine and her father's) answers. Well, of course I took advantage of the situation to have a political discussion with her (as best I could with a 7 yo ;-D)!
I really do think that there is major change in the air! I very much love it!

I remember that a few days after we had this conversation, I was watching C-Span and an Obama Rally was being shown. I called her over and she sat and watched it with me for a few minutes....before something bright, shiny and most likely pink caught her eye. (lol)
It was still very nice while it lasted. ;-)

When I was 5 years old in '72 my mother would lead my brother, sister and I in chants of:
McGovern, McGovern, he's our man throw ol' Nixon in the can
My parents had a very positive impact on my political life and that's one silly example. My dad voted Hillary even after everyone in our family strongly plead Barack's case. My mom voted for Barack, even though she is someone who is in the Hillary demographic and reminds me a bit of her: smart, passionate, not afraid to fight for what she believes in and is always taking part in some sort of public service.

Picture this: It's election day 1976. A bunch of us 2nd graders are standing in line outside the school building, waiting for the morning bell to ring so we can go in. A chant rises, growing louder and louder:

We didn't realize that most of our beloved, beleaguered teachers were staunch Democrats.

We must pay attention to all the people that are registering to vote. In particular the younger folk. It is exciting to see so many young folks involved in the process. I'm old and ready to pass the baton. What was scary, the old sameo, sameo, Clinton story. I have thought all along it was time to change America and I felt that only the young could do that and if they got turned off... I know for a fact that my middle son has never been as politically involved as myself and his younger brother and he is excited and taking an active role. He claims that if Obama does not win, he will never vote again. We need these folks in the Dem party and it is time to listne to them.

In some states, you're not allowed to take someone's registration form directly to teh board of elections for them.
What I do is take it to the post office and make sure it's postmarked by the day before the deadline.

This made me cry:
Dear [redacted], Thanks for the lovely card, and beautiful picture along with the update. It’s great to hear from you, and know that you’re all making the best of –inevitable- change. [redacted], I wanted to write you back in November upon returning from the polls with the [redacted] kids who accompanied me to vote for the first time since Carter. I was thinking of you that evening, because it was only because of my regard for you that I had voted and made a field-trip of it for our kids. And, I wanted you to know that you made that much of a difference during your all-too-brief time teaching me. Won’t get all maudlin and sentimental on you; but, suffice it to say, I miss you and [redacted]....
