they weren't just there to wave him away? Hmmm? I saw some waving going on there.
That poor sap in the diner wasn't going to be voting for ANY Democrat this year. What he represents is exactly why we need to invest in our schools so we don't end up with another generation of tragically ignorant fools.

It's that thing where they repeat something that they know isn't true and claim to be outraged by it. It's creepy as hell. But it's because, on a gut level, they understand something cynical but real about American politics. With fake Fair and Balanced media being the norm, repeating a lie enough really does give it a life of its own.
The NY Times showed Obama's 'big problem' because of Reverend Wright the other day. They did a poll in which people said that they personally weren't effected by the Wright 'scandal.' But not to be denied, the poll also asked if the voters thought it might effect other voters. Lots of them said yes. So, it was reported as a Problem for Obama.
People can know something is false, like Obama's Problem with Wright. But if you just keep finding a way to talk about it as a problem, you can maybe make it into a problem. The media moguls know this and the dittoheads do to.

So this election will be really hard, especially when you have the supreme slimes (et tu Justice White?) allowing Indiana and others to restrict poor and elderly voters by making them drive for miles to get a voter ID.
Kind of like those poor folks in N.O. who couldn't just "drive away from Katrina" because they don't own cars!
Media bubbleheads are mostly rich, they will fight against Obama every day.

or at least start telling people what they need to hear instead of what they want to hear, so we can start to deal with the horrible problems confronting us in the not-too-distant future. Three guesses whom I think that candidate is. (Hint: his middle name is Hussein.)

with a voter who didn't like Barack because of his preacher, Reverend Wright, and he also didn't like Barack because he is a Muslim.
This has deep roots in American politics, apparently. Lincoln said it: "You can fool some of the people all of the time..."

You would think that the idiots heads would explode, but no, they are used to totally idiotic, contrary ideas being passed along from their TVs- look at the talking heads calling bush a "compassionate conservative" as he cuts down poor people and peppers his rich cronies with tax cuts for millionaires- oh wait Charlie Gibson- what is the most crucial item on your mind- your endless fat cat tax cuts?

Seems there is a direct corelation between ignorance and bigotry.
This campaign is such a paradox, showing how far we have come and how far we have to go.

You don't have to vote for someone to be civil and decent to him or her. So what if he was Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu? You still treat human beings like human beings. What collection of ignoramuses brought him up? He doesn't even have basic social graces. He is beneath contempt.

my boyfriend just started a new job yesterday and the overtly redneck-ish crowd at his new place gave him some trouble about his "NJ for Obama" bumper sticker. Although they were nice about it and weren't too hard on him, one of his new co-workers went on and on about how we should deport every undocumented worker and their kids, because "their kids are why the schools suck."
With logic like this, who needs more education (or laws, for that matter!!!) Generation of tragically ignorant fools indeed.

by Texanomaly on Tue May 06, 2008 at 01:38:32 PM PDT
Wow.
That's what Barack was talking about when he said people 'cling' to various issues to explain their problems.
Statements like that reveal so much about why it's possible to get people to vote against their own best interests. If you suffer from that kind of ignorance and bigotry, you become very easy to manipulate.
by Sun dog on Tue May 06, 2008 at 01:49:16 PM PDT
the entire "cling" argument, whether he could have phrased it more media-friendly or not, is TRUE. It isn't offensive to any remotely intelligent and confident person. Sorry, but "cling" IS the right word.
And when you suffer from that kind of ignorance and bigotry, the wedge issue of your choice - immigration, abortion, prayer in school, gay marriage - is the only issue you can see as important. Screw a world view or a big picture.

That Kerry's 90,000 crowd in PDX was just there to see Di Caprio and Bon Jovi, who spoke/sung first.
yeah because hippie techie town Portland has always been a big Bon Jovi crowd.

it's the younger voters who sustain Obama, along with the African-Americans.
Really, the tragically ignorant ones are the older Silent and Boomer voters, who in theory had all the benefit of affordable university education and a halcyon era of American public education. THOSE are the generations of tragically ignorant fools.
What's THEIR excuse?
Let's not call GenXer's and Millennials out, please. Based on what I'm seeing, they're in better shape than their elders. They also appear to see that their elders are going to leave them with one HELL of a mess.
