I think the intent was to show just how much effort we'd have to put out physically in the getting of food and moving around if we had much less in the way of fossil fuels.
Now those Brazilian cane cutters ... I bet there is a desire for better working conditions there.

anthropomorphize, that is. The point I always make to people who complain about gas prices being too high is "if you can move my truck 25 miles for less than $3.50, I'll hire you in a second." This got me to thinking, how expensive does gas have to get before we stop taking it for granted? I think I now have an answer: When we start seeing immigrants pulling rickshaws around Los Angeles.
