As a trainer on teamwork and success, I've spent serious time on teamwork and the dynamics surrounding the ability to work as a successful team.
The problem I see with your opinion here is that you see this as a dream rather than a very realistic possibility.
The difference in values that you are perceiving is highly debatable. Respect makes room for any values differences. Great leadership and examples of respect on both candidates' parts will make room for any differences.
With great leadership by both fantastic candidates, both their camps and groups of respective candidate supporters can (and should easily be able to) defer to a newly-formed unity ticket and sacrifice for it, because in the end, as the great Coach John Wooden once said, "It's the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion."

..most of them drop the pom-poms and leave the stadium.
Voters aren't fans, though.
Fans sit still and bitch...or cheer.
Citizens, on the other hand, must be active and willing participants in electing their leaders.
They absolutely must be willing or they'll likely be inactive.
