  •  My last year in L.A. was the absolute worst (7+ / 0-)

Mr. meerkat had to sleep on our small little veranda with the dog, who was struggling to breath, poor thing.  It went on for weeks and weeks.  This was in 1985-1986.  I remember spending Christmas day on the beach with 90 degree heat.  I was so thrilled to be moving to SF, thinking that it would be like I remembered it.  We arrived here in March 1986 and it was hot until November.  I think that was either the beginning or the middle of a drought period.  It was so disappointing.

    •  huh, I remember that too (6+ / 0-)

I spent the summer of 85 in LA.  I moved there in June and back to the Bay Area in December.  Who knew we were passing each other on the freeway?

I actually liked the warm nights at first since they were such a novelty, but yeah, that wore off.  That was the summer of the Nightstalker too, but I decided I'd rather risk being murdered in my bed than sleep with the windows shut up and no AC.

I don't remember it being that hot, but I'd been living in L.A. before then, so probably in comparison it was pleasant. I do remember sleeping with the door to the deck open at night (28th floor) but I always have to have a window open. I suppose that would change if I lived someplace like Buffalo.

SF, even though the temp never got as high, always felt hotter on hot days because the humidity level there is high. Now we are starting to get humid days in LA (for the past decade), and that really sucks. The dry heat was one of the good things about this place. It's still dry during those Santa Ana conditions, but the rest of the time it's not.
