please before another accident like the one in the Gulf of Mexico is made, please have someone read this

Not until three weeks later, after further excavation at the site, did plant officials learn that material was contaminated. Radioactivity readings were hundreds of times above levels found naturally in soil; they were also nearly nine times higher than the plant's "action level," the limit that triggers immediate steps to seal contaminated areas inside the plant

The most compelling was the testimony of Gary Vander Boegh. Mr. Vander Boegh was a contract engineer at the Paducah, Kentucky Gaseous Diffusion Plant for many years. He and his boss were "conveniently" fired after he began to report serious environmental crimes of improper/illegal dumping of radiological (enriched uranium), hazardous waste in Western Kentucky. Mr. Vander Boegh alleged that these crimes have been going on for years and continue to be "covered up" by numerous government officials with the Department of Energy (DOE), KY Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative Ed Whitfield - just to name a few. enterprise where oversight is limited .. well, it's a given we're going to have corruption. The price we pay for having this technology in an atmosphere of fear.

Illness and death from long term low level radiation poisoning is like illness and death from air pollution. Very hard to pin down to a cause and say absolutely 'this person got cancer and died because this plant burns coal' or 'this person got cancer and died because this plant leaked radiation'.

Statistical analysis of nameless and faceless people just doesn't seem to tickle the public's fancy.

Flying planes into buildings, blowing up the Murrah Federal Court Building - those get the public's attention. Of course, they should get attention, but the silence on these other issues clearly is a failure of today's media to do their job bringing it front and center.
