  •  Here's the way democracy works (7+ / 0-)
    1. If you're in power, you can discipline your base to stand with you, up to a point. But if you don't throw them some red meat - or at least a few scraps - every so often you're gonna lose 'em.
    2. And once you're out of power - or looking to be out of it in short order, you have no leverage over them at all. Quite the opposite, even.
    3. Incumbent Democrats in a pro-challenger climate need to shore up the base
    4. Historically, the carrot-and-stick routine works nicely
    6. I can't speak for everyone but I like carrots
    7. Also - after years of Republican boogey-man tactic the "OMG what if THEY win because YOU did not stand with HIM" lines? They might have tested well in focus groups but out here in real world? Not so much.
    8. Did I mention I like carrots? :)
