    It makes sense that they would react from a position of fear. Fear of differences. Fear of what they do not understand. Fear that what they were taught to believe is actually the antithesis of God's love. Many religions (not all of them, of course) use shame as a control mechanism, because it appeals to our most basic emotions. Using the symbol of God as Stern Father can motivate the masses to all kinds of sick, divisive displays as the ignorant child in them desires only to please and gain approval.

    The arrogance is just a byproduct of their feelings of superirority and another way for them to "feel good" about themselves.

    Of course, I'm like Lucy with a sign that says "Psychiatric Help 5¢", so what do I know? ;)
